Essentially found a 2 x 12 in good shape for a good price. These things are loaded with celestion 70/80's which are junk but I know I'll be swapping them out. I checked musicians friend and these cabs go for anywhere from 330-350$. I see unloaded cabs go for around the 2-300 mark or more if from cab building companies. These cabs look sturdy http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-LAN-GS212IE-LIST and that is what I want for playing out or live. Something that can be loaded and unloaded and stand up to abuse. So how do these things sound? With good speakers are they comparable to MArshall 2 x 12's? Tight bass? I've got some eminence Super V's that need a home.

I filled in for a guitarist for about 2 weeks that did ozzy and VH covers. He was running a laney GH100TI through two of laney's higher end 4x12's. Instead of hauling my 5150 and cabinets back and forth i just used his and brought my pedals/effects.

Laney cabinets sound killer. The speakers you want to try in them are the H|H series in the old laney block letter cabs. When H|H went under laney bought the rights to the H|H speakers and loaded them in guitar cabs for a while.

If you want the cabinet just to swap speakers then that also works - the cabinets themselves were solid and never rattled or sounded terrible. To be honest, before purchasing my splawn cabinets I had considered running Laney's for a very long time. If you search the ann landers thread for laney you will see i mention them multiple times during that practice session/period.

When you get replacement drivers, make sure they are 8ohm like the stock speakers, so the rear jack and switches work as expected. All my 212's have this option to do 4ohm or 16ohm mono. Also 8ohms per side stereo. Allows the cabs to work with my variety of amps....

For sure, I have two 8 ohm waiting to drop in and like to have only 8's for 1x12's or 4x12's. I actually really like the idea of the stereo 8 pair as you could even do wet/dry in the same cab.

I had a 4x12 that had the HH speakers in, didn't sound bad running my VH100 through it.

Like a fool I pulled those HHs and put Vin30s in and I was immediate :'( over the tone, or lack thereof, from the Vin30s. In a fit of I HATE this tone, I sold it (for a profit) and ended up re-cabbing via Avatar with Emi V12s.

I guess if I was smart I'd've just sold the Vin30s and got V12s... but I was so TIRED of the tone I was SURE that it was the chemistry between the cab and the Vin30s. It is like a decade now, still have that Avatar and using V12s!
