Left (Mono) / Right (Stereo) Question

So, uhm... which side is "left"? Left if you're facing your cabinets, or Left if facing away from them? Obviously it doesn't matter as long as you pick an orientation and stick with it down the FX line, but just curious how everyone defines Left & Right...
