I'm no Les Paul expert, and a friend of mine would sell me his 1999 Standard in black
Guitar is in good shape, except some idiotic previous owner sanded the "Les Paul" logo off the headstock
I'm wondering how much this would affect value
How much would you LP experts value this guitar at?
Help much appreciated

I just sold a near mint 1996 cherry burst standard for $1900 on Craigslist.

You will probably have to knock off hundreds for the genius act of sanding off the logo. However, there is always a buyer for everything, so if you have time keep it up for sale and stay firm with your ask if price.

sanding that off will take value away for sure.

In this market, I'd say that's a $1,000 guitar. You can find standards in solid colors for $1400 no problem and those don't have the logo sanded off.

Just to be more clear, the Gibson logo is still there, only the Les Paul signature logo is missing
The headstock isn't sanded bare (still fully black), the logo probably was wet sanded off

Still, $1k, tops, sounds about right. I personally wouldn't even pay that much. Altering logos is a big no-no.

this. without the logo, I wouldn't give more than 5-600 bucks for it.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around WHY on earth anyone would sand anything off the headstock of a nice Gibson LP. Does... not... compute...

Go figure
One way or another, idiocy has something to do with it

No idea, it's a stupid, idiotic move. But, one of he reasons I like Customs is because no one else's name is on the guitar (except the truss rod cover, which can be swapped out). I like owning gear that I've heard my favorite musicians use, but I don't like having their name plastered on the gear. Partially because their name wasn't on the guitar (or amp, or pedal, or whatever) when they recorded (or performed) the songs that gave them a name.

I would love to own a G&L Rampage cuz of Cantrell, but I don't like how the new ones have his sig on the headstock...

You could get a new veneer put on that headstock. It might be worthwhile, even if it costs $100-200 to do it (no idea what that runs).

I'd offer him $1000 for the guitar, all things considered.

Unless it's a good deal I would avoid. I would also get the serial and send to Gibson and see if it is even real. Serials can be faked though. Friend or not something is fishy about that guitar. Get a pic or two and post them if you can. Black Les Paul Std's IMHO don't seem to have a big demand.

if they used virtuoso on the headstock it will take the signature off.happens alot.

Turns out the guitar is actually a 1994
Mixup is due to 94 Gibsons having different serial numbers
I have seen pictures, I don't doubt it's genuine; I'll check control cavity, pickups, truss rod and everything else to make sure it's truly genuine when I see it in person. I don't really want to use my friend's pictures without his permission, but I can take my own pics and post them soon.

Still a 12-$1500 guitar, depending on condition. Any semi decent luthier can put a new Les Paul waterslide on the headstock, re-clear it, and make it look new for under a $100. I had one done a few years ago for $60. Couldn't tell the difference.
