Has anyone played a standard and a traditional side by side to see the differences? I'm gonna be getting another LP soon. I already have a R8. I was wanting to get a Trad, but are the really that different? one better than the other?

For the coin, bro, get one of the new Tyler Variax 59's. Everyone in the audience will think it's a real LP and it's got 25 models in it, including a ton of LP's.

I have played quite a few Standard 08's lately and they have been great players and great tone.

I have an 09 Traditional....plays incredible. Of course it sounded like shit with a pair of Classic 57's...muddy and undefined. Gutted it and put in Painkillers and Sperzels, and filed the nut ( I guess Plec doesn't do that). I have an old, well played 90's Classic that is totally stock and it just slays. Perfect as it is.
Dan (Devilinside) has a new Classic or Studio that is top notch.
Honestly, you have to try them and find "The One".

Go play a bunch of them then pick out the best

I know this may seem "standard advice", but it is really the only way to get a great Les Paul. When I wantred my first LP, I tried to go the used route, but none of the ones local were "it" to me.

A friend in retail called me to say he had a shipment just come in, and I went down and played every single one until I found "mine". I was shocked at how different the same model sounded from guitar to guitar.

As a precursor, I own, or have owned many a Historic R9 and R8. Also own a G0 and used to own an R0. Also own a 70 Goldtop. Only want to get that out of the way when the people want to say I dont understand because I havent owned a historic.

Wandered into GC yesterday and played a Goldtop Traditonal Pro and a regular Traditional in blackburst with a mild flame top.

Both had a nice weight to them. Both SCREAMED and were setup like noones business right from the factory. ( a rarity from Gibson, and something that has never occured with my Historics). Both were flawless in fit and finish. But, was sold on the Goldtop.

They just got the finish, and everything right. Love the locking tuners. Loved the pups on both. Nice chocolatey dark board. Fretwork was perfect. I think, for me it really comes down to this, take it as you wish.

I like my Historics, even though I have sold a few off because it finally occured to me that I liked the idea of owning them far more than actually playing them. Never liked the pups in them, was always swapping, etc...

This traditional and the regular one are like the standards alot of the guys played in the 80's, when I REALLY dug Les Pauls. I am 42. Sure, some of those guys had older ones, but not usually. The recent standards had something lacking to me, not sure what it was.

This bitch snarls. If I want a mellow 50's tone, which I usually dont, I will take out a historic. But for balls to the wall heavier rock, this thing kills. Far more lower end than my Historics.

My amigo at GC said they cant keep them in stock, and every single one comes out of the box with killer setups, ready to go. Gibson is really doing something right with these. I will eventually, maybe, get a standard traditional, but I LOVE the neck on the Traditional Pro and the satin finish. I see this guitar aging with style, for sure.

For reference. I know what a good LP sounds like when I am sucking ass on one.

Traditional = weight relieved
Standard = chambered

By a mile, I prefer Traditional models. Specifically, the Traditional Plus suits me for the thicker 50s neck, but the Pro is also excellent. The Standards are decent guitars, but the chambered body softens the attack a little and doesn't have the same sustain. In other words, they're not what most people are used to when thinking of a Les Paul.

Try out a bunch of Traditional LPs and find one that works for you!

Yes!

The Traditional PRO is my Favorite Guitar... I have a Ebony and just bonded with it a year ago... I seldom pickup any of my other 12 guitars anymore.

Burstbucker III in the Bridge that I love, Can't find something I like better to put in.

Good Weight, Good Action. Love it!

Be advised the Trad Pro has the SLIM 60's NECK. Another Plus for me, as I find the standard Paul neck a little Clubby.

Roid RAGE

Nothing relieved about my Traditional, it weighs 10#...and every LP has a different neck. My Trad has a wide/thin, kinda a mix of my RGA 121 and my Carvin CT6 and my Classic has a really small neck.

What's the difference between "weight relieved" and "chambered"?

Weight relieved on the left, different chambered models on right.

Too many people dismiss the chambered models without actually trying them. I have a 2007 standard that is chambered, and it kills.

I had two Trad Pro's and loved them both. I traded one to try a Trad Plus and like that one a lot too. I kind of like the satin neck on the Pro better and really prefer the locking tuners on the Pro.

X a million.

Those locking tuners are great, and the satin finish is smooth as hell.

And the same here on that BB III. No way I am changing that pup.
