i have my jsx apart, doing a few things to it. while searching the net i found a post on another forum where a guy mentioned making these changes and what they did for the sound of the amp....
changes:
C21 470nf => 1 ufd. Lets more low mid and bass through.
C3 1nfd => 2.2 nfd. Again lets more lower mids and bass through.
C8 470pfd => 2.2nfd ala Soldano. Really gets rid of the thin nasal tone. This is often changed on Marshalls as it is a treble peeking circuit.
C35 Remove, not present on the original Ultra design. C35 is a 10nfd cap which is really really small for this location. It basically makes the last triode stage act like a treble booster (Joe likes his treble) and it drops the volume. So the amp will be alittle louder and fuller.

will it matter exactly what type of capacitors i use ? as far as radial, axial, or ceramic disk etc. etc. ... i am good with a soldering iron, but not an electronic genius, so a little help would be much appreciated

yeah, i just found the appropriate size caps in the same configuration as the originals, and everything worked out great.

ceramic ones?

honestly i dont know. i found the coupling capacitors from valvestorm.com in the values i needed, so i went with those. they had all the proper ratings on them. they were the mojo dijon brand

Mallory 150 series or Sprague Orange Drop are likely what you're looking for. No need to spend a bunch of money for anything boutique. I definitely would not use ceramic....

Not sure if these links will work for you, but worth a shot.

thanks for the info. i already have the appropriate values for the mods i wanna do to it, but they seem a bit large in size for the particular spot they are going in. i may look into getting those for comparison.

i am just trying to thicken up the tone and then figure where to start in order to tighten the amp up a bit more. not really in a hurry to do the mods, so i will give the site a look through.

thanks

No problem. Try not to get lost at Mouser, they have an incredible selection as they are a major supplier.

If you have and can send me the schematic I can make suggestions for mods...

That would be awesome. I can get you one. Ill pm you once i get ahold of it. I think i have it stored on my computer somewhere
