Long weekend of doing amp clips. Engl cabinet with V30 and V60 x pattern

The Diezel Herbert sounds the best by far, the other two aren't even close.

Greetings fellow rig enthusiasts and guitarslingers. I'd like to share my humble thoughts here regarding this specific amp shootout. I have recently been acquainted with Mike Lickliter and had the pleasure of test driving four of his stellar amp designs, all of which were far beyond impressive on all levels. I have also heard both the Diezel and Engle amps in question here, up close and personal on several occasions and find them both to be more than worthy of their individual heavy weight reputations, to say the least. In my opinion, in the endless sea of high gain amp shootouts, a few vital factors regarding the "test bed" for these comparisons should be acknowledged before reaching a final verdict. Two different speaker cabinets were used for this amp battle. As drastic as different speaker cabs can be to a tonal equation, such comparisons can be deceiving. EQ settings and balanced output levels from amp to amp will vary, tending to offset a fair comparison also. There is no doubt that if any one of these three gain monsters fell into my lap at present, I would be armed and dangerous. I spent a good 4 hours hanging with Mr. Lickliter last week upon our introduction, his passion for his craft, attention to detail, and professionalism are second to none. Probably the most impressive factor I see and hear with his designs would be each amps tonal versatility. If you seek bite, huge balls, warmth, subtle nuance, giant sustain, and enormous punch.. Mike's amps are true killers!! I would like to encourage a rematch with this shootout involving one speaker cab, same riff or musical content, more comparable EQ settings, etc.

I agree, too many differences to honestly compare.

Send one to Ola for a great comparison.

In this specific shootout Diezel takes it no contest at all.

That engl cab is actually my cab and this is video was taken in my room. As all of you clearly know: Amps sound different in person then on ANY recorded format. The video and sound was done with a ZOOM recorder. This video comes close to representing how the amp sounds minus the pretty extreme amount of low end and the higher end sizzle. It has a fat body without getting flubby and retains it's clarity when chugging on the lower strings. It has a good amount of highend without getting any kind of static to it at all nor does it produce any undesirable frequencies that hurt the audiences ears or your own while you're playing it in your room. This amp is SUPER responsive and really connects you to the speaker and then slams you in face lol. It isn't your average modded marshall tone. Very far from that. This is a sound all of its own with brightness without any dryness and has PLENTY of distortion on tap. The EQ is very responsive all the way across the board and has good separation in the signal chain (Low just adds low end, mids just add midds, ect...) It has no hollow or that "Cheap" amp sound.

Great tone. Great built amp. I would be happy to own one of these and to perform with it regularly.

I only see one video... Where's the Diezel and Engl?

anyone else get the feeling that this Duke Diggler guy is really just the Lickliter guy?

the video's been edited twice - he probably nixed them, that would be my call.

IMHO i think it is a poor mindset as a manufacturer to believe if people do not like your stuff in the masses then it is not right for anyone. You cant please them all, dont bother trying. Build your product to the best of your abilities and leave it at that - nothing more, nothing less. If you try to make it a competition then someone is bound for a rude awakening.

keyword here is best of your abilities. R&D goes along way, i cant even count how many times DAR has had artist input on their amplifiers for voicing and tuning both live and under a mic - its a tune and test ballgame with tubes IMHO.

Ive spoken with him through another forum (forget the name) and you are right, excellent build quality and deserves more credit than others - he's got a few project ideas that sound promising.

New news: new clips all through the same cab, YAY! :D

Old news: Herbert still sounds the best.

Sorry, but the Licker amps sound mushy with poor note definition. The Herbert is tight and clear.

Duke is actually a customer that is getting an amp modded by Michael at the moment. ;)

O.K. The clips were re-done due to the speaker choice of my amps on the 1ST round. This thread was not suppose to seem as a competition by any means. All of these amplifiers sound incredible by themselves. Each and every one of them have a character of their own. BTW I am not Duke Diggler as he is an excellent guitar player and he craves great tone as I will be providing a mod on one of his amps. I love all amps and I am constantly cultivating different designs thru research and developement. I am a long time player and musician that loves great tone and with alot of hard work and dedication I will be successful at this. I will be adding newer and better soundclips to represent my amplifiers as time progresses. Thank you for your input and feedback. :D

Yes he does! I was at his house a few days ago when we did the first clips and he showed me some of his projects and WOW. They are great! I thoroughly enjoyed them all.

seriously... anyone who says any of these videos sounds MUCH better than the other is full of shit
they sound slightly different and they are all VERY compressed
if I really had to pick one from these without knowing what is what, that would be the custom 100 by a very small margin, and then the herbert

I know there's some more opinions on this out there! Let's hear some more!
