Aiiight, so I snag this disc and I'm pretty blown away by the guitar tones. This is just a stock DSL50 with a boost? Killer rhythms and leads! Should be in everyones player/ipod, if you dig the 80's metal.

Definitely sounds more like old school Dokken, scaryingly Lynch-ish. Tone was ok.

Yup, I was told it was a combo of DSl's and a 900 that he had and some Marshall cabs. Id be willing to bet that the tone would be even better with H30 speakers.

nope. Pretty sure it was v30's.

yeah,it's a really good album.bought it a few weeks ago.i think it's the best music Dokken's put out since the Lynch days.the guitar "tones" and "chops" are killer! ...out of curiousity,i did e-mail,Jon Levin,as to which "pickup" he recorded with,in his guitar, for THIS album...he answered: Dimarzio "Tone Zone".

Great guitar player and good tone on the cd... I just can't stand Don Dokken after hearing a few very disturbing things about him recently. The guy's a class "A" HORRIBLE human being. period.

Levin rocks!! I love his playing and tone on this new Dokken cd and also i really dug the bootleg of his old band which Ralph posted a while back.. cant remember the name though

It's quite shocking to hear people liking a new Dokken CD! I haven't heard that phrase in many years. lol...

Now I have to check it out!

It's definitely better than their other latest efforts. It's because they finally realized it's time to try and please the old fans, not make new ones.

BINGO!!! ...hit the nail on the head!!!

I listened to the clips on Amazon.com and was not inspired to buy it. I am a Dokken fan too. I guess I need to hear entire songs because the clips just did nothing for me.

goddamn, I've gotta check this out!

my rig -

tone zone - boost - dsl50 - vintage 30's!

Amen to that..I d'loaded it..have to buy it on my next trip to Dimple.

I think I still prefer Up from The Ashes (John Norum) but that's 'coz I haven't listened to the new one much.

Up from the Ashes is almost impossible to top... i dont mean that against all of Dokken's releases, but Up From The Ashes is by far the best non-Lynch Dokken album ever made. All IMO!

The new Dokken "Lightning Strikes Again", I just got today...listened to it and it is very Lynch like indeed...however the overall CD sounds like a cross between Lynch and the playing Norum did on "Up from the Ashes" Don's solo cd....great cd in my opinion...

just my opinion, but i liked when JNorum sat in with dokken because he plays his own signature feel and approach..this guy is a total lynch copy, great player, but I'd rather see Norum any day over Levin. Those Euro-Cats have that strong melodic sense and cool bluesy stuff.

Norum rocks  One of my alltime biggest influences!

Ant, did you ever see Don Dokken live during the Up From The Ashes era? I know Ralph did.. Lucky bastard :D :gethim: Id give anything to go back in time and catch one of those shows with John Norum and Billy White on guitar!

Sorry Brother, Id have to humbly disagree. Norum playes in a style of whoever he was listening to at the time. I have Recordings of him where he copied licks that were directly lifted from Gary Moore,Lynch,Yngwie,ETC.ETC. I think he is a great player but on most of his recording you definitely knew who Norum was listening to at the time and it showed in his playing. I don't think that he found his own voice until years later.

As far as Levin being a Lynch copy, there is no denying that he was going for a Lynch vibe on that disc even although he denied it in interviews lol.
I grew up watching Levin play in clubs and he's always had a Lynch/EVH style. To be honest with you , he is not playing up to his ability in Dokken. The shit that he used to pull off live back in the 80's was mind-bending.

yep, i know that levin guy can do some shit, i heard him playing in the back room at Bogner a few years back and he can definitely rip it up. And u r correct about JN copying those dudes, i guess its the songwriting that i dug and love Norum's vibrato. I saw levin and norum both with Dokken and enjoyed norums performance over Levin's....matter of taste. I remember he played a Black Les Paul all night through MArshalls and it was just powerful and yet played soulful.

what the hell is Norum up to these daze anyway?
