Which of these has the best amp tones for headphone or monitor use? Opinions will vary i am sure.

I've only briefly demoed the Digi and I own the HD500. After diving into the HD and figuring out all the crazy routing options and the fact that it can be used in pedalboard mode as an M13 for fx only or obviously as an amp modeler, I have to vote HD. For just a straight up tone comparison and other features aside, I'd say it's a draw. Without getting in deep to either unit, my first impressions were about the same for both. (headphones for both)

Here's the thing, get comfortable with either unit and plug into a good power amp or the fx return of a good head and either one will slay for live use. For studio I'd go with real amps or maybe a Kemper, but for live the modelers out today are perfect IMO. I know you didn't mention live use, but for the total amount of bang for your buck I'd go HD

this will be just for home use..with headphones or may buy a monitor....thing is....i really don't play any more...have no time for it...i don't even own an amp right now...have most of my stuff sold...i'll be keeping one guitar to go along with whichever modeler i get...family comes first..then i also have too many other hobbies I am more interested in these days than guitar....i just want to have something to plink around with if i have some time and want to.

Are you a big effects guy? The pedalboard mode alone is worth the price of admission. (actually it is the same price as the M13) You can kill many hours just putting different boards together and messing around with the expression pedal. Fun stuff. Most of the fx are done pretty well.

are you talking about the rackmount line 6?

Tried both and for amp models I liked the PODHD. 4CM for effects on an amp I'd go Digitech.

i'd go digitech as well, especially for higher gain tones

the pod hd is a solid unit however

Nope, the floorboard model. By default it's setup to switch "channels" or between different amp models, so like a typical modeler you switch banks and select A, B, C, D for whatever amp patch you want.
OR
You can set all eight switches up to act as one pedalboard. So you turn off amp modeling and just run the board into your amp (or use 4CM) or use the HD as an interface into your computer and make a pedalboard setup with 8 effects. They can all be run simultaneously and each of the 8 switches turns on/off one of the pedals which you can assign. It's like having a GCP controlling your racked effects, but if you get bored you can choose 8 new effects. So basically you can store a ton of different pedalboard setups and assign the expression pedal to cut or boost different factors in those effects. It really is incredibly versatile, but most people don't realize that it can be used that way. In a way it is better for effects than the M13 because you can run 8 effects at the same time where the M13 can only do 4.

I'been asking my self the same question about this 2 units, can you use the 4 cable method like in the digitech like using amp model for clean and using your amp distortion?

for tone alone...Digitech by far. for effects, the digitech is really nice, especially in 4CM. i thought pod hd500 tone was weak and sterile/brittle...the effects were very nice though.
