When I list a guitar and pose it for pictures I put something under it to protect the finish.
There is a seller on Reverb where I swear the guitar is sitting directly on a slab of outdoor granite.
The outdoor shot for natural light is fine don't lay a nice guitar on stone or gravel. Sometimes they are laying in snow
Here is an example:

Yeah I don't what these guys are thinking. I've seem them laying them on grass, against trees, on bare wooden decks just for a nice background and natural light I guess... all to my horror!

Used to bug the shit out of me but honestly if theyre careful, no harm.

One of the resident flippers here does this quite often.

It doesn't take much to fuck up the finish. One slip or bump you get finish rash or worse. Why risk it.
Especially when you are trying to sell it.

The key when doing this properly is to hide what it's actually laying on. If you can see the microfiber towel the guitar is actually on when it's on a deck or other possible damage inducing background it's a crap photo. If you're just laying it on concrete or a deck, you're just asking for damage no matter how gentle you are when you put it down. Don't assume every shot in a precarious situation is as it seems. Sure, some people are straight up dumb and think laying a guitar on concrete is ok, others know better and can hide the reality.

No matter what happens to the finish, it cant be worse than the headstock on those things.

If they can't take the time to spell the title correctly, I don’t even get to the pictures
