Well I played a used Lone Star Combo and a few Les Pauls at Guitar Center here in Tulsa last night. As much as I want to love Les Pauls every time I do much of any bends they go straight out of tune, the studios and standards both felt very close to the same, the standard frets seemed a bit better and the locking input jack was nice. The Studio had a huge knick from being banged around and they would take 5% off for that, how kind of them.

The Lone Star was a nice amp, played at the 5w and 30w setting, not sure what speaker the combo had in it, but got to play it in the private room so I cranked it up without much interruption. Gain sounds were very Andy Timmons like and the cleans were very nice on the amp. Could not get the gain real high without some major microphonic squeal however, not sure if it was a tube or not. Overall a very nice amp and the drive channel was pretty pleasing. Only played with it for about 30 minutes but was pretty easy to dial in quite a few pleasing tones and seemed like a good amp overall.

GC Employee stupidity of the night, not sure if we have any cabinets you can plug into to test the amp out with, I told him it was a combo so I would be okay, he argued not to plug in when speaker not connected.

I had to replace the nut and tuners and use nut lube on my Studio, but it now stays in tune pretty well. Still not perfect.
If you liked the Lone Star, check out an Electra-Dyne if you haven't already. The Lonestar was cool but I thought it was a little too thick and dark. Still a good amp though.

Gotta love stupid GC employees.  I don't know how many times I've been at GC's and the dudes just fire up a head with no load connected or shut it off without cooling down the tubes in standby. The latter probably isn't as important as the first, but still...

Lone Star Special? If so, try one of the new P90 LPs, killer combo. I have played two or three of the new P90 models and they have all stayed in tune and been very resonant, great bang for the buck.

I played a show in St.Louis at a really nice venue...and daver101 let me borrow a lonestar combo, 2x12...the soundman said it was one of the best guitar tones he heard in a long time.

I love both the Lonestar and the Lonestar Special. Great amps! Sound great with P90s.

Hey Brian! :)

I love my Lonestar Classic head. Really RAWKS with a BB preamp. Actually, I'm dig'n it with the Rocket Fuel even more. The Rocket Fuel has an OD and a boost. The boost adds a little needed brightness. With the OD and the boost...I'm in tone heaven.

Is the Classic darker than the standard model/Special? Every one I've played has been pretty dark sounding. The maple top on an LP helped a bit.
