I just realized I’ve got a room in the house with a closet that measures 6ft by 6ft by 9ft…
I’d like to convert this closet into an isolated room where I can roll in a 4x12, mic it and then crank the volume on an Amp which would be sitting outside of the closet
How do I go about soundproofing so the sound is contained in the closet? Is this doable?
Surely I’m not the first person who has had this idea…any folks here have experience building such a room?
Sound proofing is extremely, extremely expensive to do right. And it’s one of those things that is all the way or nothing. Even an electrical outlet in your closet if not treated appropriately will let out an incredible amount of sound even if everything else is right. There is no substitute whatsoever if you wanna do it right, literally none. It’s physics. There is tons of resources online about the sound deadening ability of just about every material on earth, and how many decibels it will drop in different configured patterns.
The idea is, you need to build a room within a room. Meaning, framing out another closet inside of your own closet, with a 6 inch air gap on ALL 6 sides ( all 4 sides, floor and ceiling) you will need a lot of 1/2 inch drywall, as well as certain types of clasps that do not transmit vibrations/noise when “connecting” the outside room to the inside room. Again, this is all physics and there is tons of resources online how to do it appropriately. You’ll need to float the floor and fill it with sand as well.
Sound proofing is a great idea on paper, but not doable for most, even for addicts like me ha. What you can do, is something along the lines of building 4, 4’x 4’ square frames that you can place inside of your closet, making almost like an isolation box. I had one made years ago, and for this purpose it works well. Inside the frames are 48”x48” pieces of 4 inch thick rockwool. You will need the rockwool to A: deaden the sound in the room, and B: to get rid of combfiltering from sound bouncing off the wall, flipping 180 degrees out of phase, and back into your microphone. This is 100 percent not a maybe, you will need something like thick rockwool regardless if you sound proof your closet appropriately or not.
Then, take those wheels off your 4x12 cabs, and place them OFF the ground on top of cinderblocks. This decouples the sound from the floor, which will lower the decibels even more. Honestly this is your best bet, anything else is so incredibly expensive it’s not worth it.
