Something in the $400-700 range that's reliable and portable.

Some things I am considering:

SpiderValve (I don't like that I have to get the footswitch separate, though)
Maybe a small Fender combo to slam with my BB Preamp

Ideas? I've been so out of GAS lately it's not funny... but I hate carrying around a head and cab to short jam sessions. I must be getting fuckin' old or something...

I got my DSL combo for $500 shipped. I really like it.

I used to own a DSL401. It had some good tones, but just didn't do anything for me. :/

The next tube combo I get is the Vox AC30 112.

The AC30 CC2 sounds great w/ a boost, and the EL84 crunch worked well for classic rock to punk/hard rock. I pushed mine with a Rat, then later an OCD. They have a good fx loop too. I had an MXR EQ and a Holy Grail in the loop, and with the volume that those things crank out, I had a really killer overall hard rock tone.

It just weighed too much. Traded it away for a JMP 2204 cause it was just easier to carry a head and cab. After having the 212, and have tried out the 112, I know it can handle what I want. They sound great loud, and have a really good MV.

Good luck with your search.

It gets mentioned a million times, but the PV classic 30 is a great combo amp. Practice and gigs, it works great.

How about some of the discontinued Mesa 1x12 combos? Anyone have any thoughts on, say, the Studio .22, Rocket series, etc? I should say I'm leaning closer to a really great, fat clean tone that takes well to pedals.

my vote goes for the classic 30

replace the stock speaker in it, get new tubes and it's a workhorse. It takes well to pedals and is a great workingmans amp

Oh yeah. Mk III 1x12 is on my wishlist too.

I know its not a 12" combo... but those fender blues (junior and pro) are pretty awesome combo amps. If I weren't building a tweed champ clone Id just buy one of those.

edit: actually I just double checked.. they are 12" combos.. I thought they were 10".

Exactly what I did. I've got a Hellatone 30 in there and I think a JJ, Sovtek, and an EH in the pre---it sounds great. Throw the BB Pre-amp in front and you can get about anything you need out of it.
