Lovepedal Purple Plexi 800 vs MI Audio Crunch Box v2

The only MI Audio pedal I've liked is the Tube Zone. The others are too mushy sounding IMO...

From owning a CB and hearing your clip of the PP800 I could have told you that was a mistake before you did it.

Good luck finding another PP800...it did sound awesome in your clip. I'd love to get my hands on one myself.

Also, if you can't get your hands on another PP800 you might want to check out the ToneBone Plexitube. The proguitarshop clip on youtube sounds freakin' awesome!

Funny thing Thump, i just got a Crunchbox yesterday and I'm sending it back today. I think it sounds like complete shit, one of the worst pedals i have tried. I tried it on the clean of my IIC+ and it makes it sound squashed.

I used a TS808 for years and should probably just stick to TubeScreamers. But I'm probably going to leave my clean channel alone.

Try the new OCD v4.

I've had v1 and v2 and they were both too scooped for me when used as a distortion box into a clean amp.

I played in a band with a guy who used a MIJ DS-1 Boss distortion pedal into a Fender amp, a 1x12 combo. I think it was a Princeton. That Boss pedal he had was one of the orange ones. I thought his tone was always phenomenal and most of the gain he was getting was from the Boss distortion pedal. That was one of the better pedals I've heard for boosting a clean tone. I guess those old MIJ ones really were good.

I don't understand the Fulltone love.
I have had 2 of his pedals and they all sound flat.

didnt care for my Crunchbox either...

the Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde wiped the floor with it..

as a full on distortion the "Hyde" side of the Visual sound is a great crunchy rock sound..add in the awesome TS clone and you have a very underrated pedal..

Thump..have you ever tried a Jekyll and Hyde with your amp? Underrated for sure...

Also, the good 'ole "Plank Cranker" continues to impress me. At a gig this past weekend, I used my little Crate V30 head and matching 2x12" cab with a board that contained a Boss TU2 tuner and Plank Cranker into the amps input, then a SubDecay Echobox and Boss GE7 in the amps effects loop.

During some songs, I'd change the amp over to clean and only use the Plank Cranker for a light/medium distortion. Not an OD, but a distortion. Both the soundman and I were like "dang, that pedal sounds like a real amp!" It DID! It was freaking great sounding. Didn't sound like a pedal AT ALL.

It's very impressive if you ask me.

I'm still using the Cranker as a solo boost on my overdriven 800. Sounds great!

Thump....exact same findings with me....I traded my Lovepedal 200 lbs of tone for a Crunchbox/cash and although the crunchbox is okay, it doesn't hold a spark to my BB preamp. It really sucks for a boost, but if you run it as a distortion, it isn't too bad. Sounds pretty marshally. My advice is to turn down that internal trim pot so that it isn't so bright. Once I did that it sounds better....but I am still going to turn it.

Well, just had rehearsal at lunch time at work...LP VM--->OCD v4--->Crate V3112. The OCD sounded great with that setup....Love Removal Machine is one of our tunes and the guitar through the OCD sounded nice and fat through the rhythm parts...kicked in the amp boost for the solo and that first sustained note just screamed through.....I really like this pedal. :D

You really owe it to yourself to adjust the internal trim pot. I didn't like my Crunch box at first either. I adjusted that trim pot and it made a big difference.

I use mine into my '69 Fender Bandmaster reverb and like it pretty well. Since my marshall 2553 stays at my practice space, I use the CB into the the fender to get semi-marshall sounds for practice.

Since you like the HBE plank cranker, why not check out one of the HBE distortion pedals?

Try the OCD v.4 at 18V, it really is a different beast!

I had one of the early HW PP800's and liked it but not enough to justify the expense and flipped it. Right after flipping it I checked out a Lovekraft Mojo Drive and haven't looked back! It's toggle switch makes it VERY versatile with it's 3 positions. Up is "Marshall in Box", middle is a really nice boost and in the down position is a Ethan's take on a Tube Screamer.

They can be had for pretty cheap used too. The old big box versions can be had for less than $100.00(I got mine for $90.00 shipped and PP'd) over at TGP and the "stealth" versions can be had for $100.00-110.00. If you get an old version, send it to Ethan and he'll update it for you for a very minimal price. It's worth checking out and it won't break the bank. If it's not for you, you should easily be able to get your cash back!

If you are looking for a good dirt box, check out the hughes & Kettner Tube Factor, or the Warp Factor. I've owned both boxes, and was EXTREMELY impressed with both.

The Tube factor has two "channels." A lower gain (TS leverls) side and a "high" gain side (boosted JCM800ish). I used to used it and the WF with my Legacy's clean channel to great results. If you want high gain from the TF, slam it with either a clean boost, or a compressor and it will get into Splawn levels of gain. Very sweet.

The Warp factor is also very nice, but doesn't have a tube. It was my main goto dirt tone with the Legacy. Very thick in all the right places, and solos were liquid smooth. I still have the WF and it makes an appearence on my board here and there... although with four channels of amp I don't use too many dirt boxes anymore.

It's not really that it's super bright, though. It lacks any low end balls whatsoever and that SUCKS!!! I'm using it as a distortion pedal into a clean Twin.

I'm going to sell the thing as soon as I get back from California. Screw that pedal! :gethim:

Stop on by!!!

Has anyone tried the newer Black colored Plexi 800 by Lovepedal? I wonder if there's any difference between it and the older Purple colored one.
