I’m looking for a low wattage metal amp. Years ago I had a mini rec and it was killer. What else should I consider? I don’t need anything more than 20 watts. Home use and gig back up amp if it’s a lunch box amp.

I’m a big fan of the Blackstar mkiii for an all in one practice amp. They do make versions of it with various wattages including 20W.

i love my little 1w Randall, the loop really makes it great. For all practical purposes, i wouldnt need anything else other than this for home metal jamming. records great too

If you can find a used Baron Snott Watt on Reverb or eBay I would highly recommend it.

Absolutely killer sounding low watt head!

Engl Fireball 25. It's a little beast, can't recommend it enough. Especially the KT77 version.

Randall 1 watt amp, it rules

Katana 100w head on the 0.5w wattage setting through a cab. People don't realize just how loud this setting gets with both channel and master volumes utilized.

Depends on what you wanna use it for.

If you mean JUST home practice? The randall 1 watt sounds killer, and lots of people like the blackstar too. I like the joyo bantamps for home practice plus cheap. Any of those would be good.

If you mean "something that could probably hang with a band if need be" then yeah youre looking at the KSR Orion, Syn 20, MT15, Fireball 25, stuff like that. They all sound good and are the best versions of the "high gain lunchbox" thing. Because none of the micro stuff or bantamps are gonna hang without (extensive) PA support.

They are never going to have the headroom of a big amp though, and there are lots of band situations where those amps are going to sound squished and saggy instead of tight at some stage volumes, So know what you're getting into.

For lunchbox amps, I'd try the PRS MT 15 and Marshall DSL 20HR,. 'd also consider the BluGuitar Mercury or Iridium since they sound great at low volume and take no room.

The KSR Orion is great. Each of the 4 channels have a volume and there's a master volume. Lots of great features on it too. It also sounds massive for a lunchbox. Anything else under 50 watts always felt really anemic.

Depends on your expectations, budget, signal chain, and preferences. I just finished playing my 100w RI Recto right after my wife went to bed and the tones and feel of the amp even at extremely low volume with my signal chain were incredible. I also have three Marshalls (2 modded and one stock) all 100w and all sound incredible at the same volumes. Obviously they all sound stupid better at volume but even at bedtime volumes the way I run them, fuckin tits.

I love the Mark V 25 for home use. As a bonus, it tracks fairly well to record & can hang wit a band/drummer alright if you jam at moderate levels.
