My friend and I recorded some clips today comparing our different cabs to see how they all reacted under the mic.

All recordings are done with a single SM57 with the same settings on the amp, give or take a nudge moving the amp/cabs around.

Cabs as follows:

Marshall 1960ahw with G12H30's
Zilla Fatboy with Lynchbacks
Framus CS212 with V30's

Amp is a Marshall JVM50h with either a Charvel in Eb for the 80's clips with a Dimarzio SD or a Charvel with a Crunch Lab for the Heavy clips.

No eq on the guitar tracks, there is a little delay on the 'Heavy' clips but not on the rythmn guitars and there is some reverb on the 80's style clip.

Let me know what you think, we tried to keep it as comparable as possible.

Cheers Tony

I like clip 2 best and 3 next. All clips sound great though. For the heavy I like 1 the best.

Yeah, rockin'

I may be baised towards the Lynchbacks :D

Nice work Tony

I have to say, I like the Lynchbacks. I think that they did a great job on those speakers!

Thanks for taking the time to do this!

Great clips Tony, thanks for sharing!

I liked the Lynchbacks for the 80's tones, and the V30's for the heavy tones

Lynchbacks are killer speakers. Great classic rock, and hard rock speakers. Very old time speaker with some modern sttributes, a little dark compared to Greenbacks, but just killer. I am installing them into a Port City 212OS.

How did you record the V30s...the recording is much quieter than the others.

Thanks, the Lynchbacks are great.

We tried to recorded all the clips the same. The difference in volume may be due to slight different mic placement from when we changed the cabs around or possibly in the mixing. All the amp controls where the same....

Thanks for listening, it was fun doing the clips with Tony!

I might be the exception to the rule I though the G12H30 killed .the were bigger sounding. warmer ,rounder ..just better to my ears ..

I liked the G12H30s as well.

Nice comparison! Thx for sharing!

:)

I want to like the lynchbacks more because i was interested in pairing one up with my Weber but i gotta say, i like how the g12h30's recorded there. funny because i sold a set not liking the highs.....so are you guys saying the lynchback is DARKER than a standard RI greenback? I def don't want a darker speaker. the Weber is somewhat smoother already.. maybe V30 type would be a better match.

A little too much variation in volume between clips. G12H30 sounded very dull and flat though. V30s and Lynchbacks are my favorite rock speakers......also ordering Creambacks. Funny I am getting Lynch speakers and I hate 80s metal.

I liked these the best too. So are these the English heritage ones or the chinese 70th anni' ones?

Thanks for listening guys. For me the G12-H30 is my favourite speaker, it records so easily and sits perfect on top of drums and under vocals. The V30 is my favourite speaker for live , it just cuts and has the low end push for the heavy stuff. I really dug the Lynchbacks and thought they had their own flavour, definitely aggressive sounding in the mids like a V30 but a bit rounder like a G12t-75. All in all it was a well spent afternoon, playing guitar and checking out loud amps.

I played around this morning for a bit and mixed the V30 with the G12-H30 for the Heavy clip, sounds great to me. Have a listen:

What are you opinions on the Weber?

I like the Weber.. I have it in a jcm800 combo and that cab is not the best sounding so I would like to move it to a 2 x 12 and really give it a run there. I find it smoother on top and maybe not to cut quite as much as i am used to so for me, I think this speaker would shine with something a little brighter. Nice top end and bottom end on the speaker though.

I liked the H30s for the heavy clip and the Lynchbacks for the 80s clip.
