So in order to stop the momentum of the National Rally party in the second round of French elections, various left-wing parties pulled their candidates out of the election, so there would only be one leftist candidate vs one National Rally candidate; it worked; it worked so well in fact that a coalition of these far left parties were able to elect a new Prime Minister without the support of the Renaissance party (that's Macron's party).
