I have a egnater M4 with T/D SL SL2X VX Rectal (DF modded recto)
How does the MAK4 compare?
I run the M4 with a rt2/50wet (axe fx II) ,fryette 2502dry
Will a Mako MAK4 be redundant to the M4 or offer a new tonal nirvana?

I can't speak too much of the Egnater, but I am an owner and a very satisfied and happy owner of the Mako Mak4. This preamp is tits. I've got it paired with a Fryette 2/90/2 power amp and typically run it through a Deliverance 4x12, stereo, and sometimes through 2 4x12 cabs (insane). Check out FastRedPonyCar's youtube vids on this preamp. I am blown away with it - the Makoplex channel is awesome, the Dorado is seriously off the hook, and the "CRUNCH" channel, as modestly named as it is, is unto itself an incredible channel that even has undertones (overtones??) of a VH4. Honestly the best preamp for the dollar out there today.

Just my 2 cents.

Got one on the way, can't wait to give it a try!!

I haven't heard the egnater modular stuff but the the mak4 is the heat. I've had mine over a year now and it's not going anywhere.

I say never miss a chance to get new gear, especially when it's somebody else's money :D
Go for it.

The M4 used to be big stuff around here........surely some of you guys have had play time on the M4 and the MAK4
Mako has a 48hr trial period but a long backorder wait
Any chance of getting a gut shot of the mako mak4?

I also found by replacing the glass, you can really dial this preamp in. I went with ECC83S Gold Lions except in the CLEAN channel position which got a JAN Phillips, and the last socket (buffer) got a TAD7025S to the best of my recollection. The JJs that came stock were okay, but this box really started to grow wings with new pres in it, YMMV.

Great, great preamp. Seriously.

+1 on being a great preamp. Andrew makes some killer amps, and is a great guy to deal with.

Not sure what happened to the pics. I'll try to reload them.

I would love to have one, but the big deal-breaker for me is 4-U. That is just too much IMO for just a 4-channel preamp. Looking at the unused space on the front plate in that picture, it really looks like it could cut down to a 3-U or even likely a 2-U.

Would you guys consider the Mako Mak 4 Pre to be good for Classic Rock and warmer Vintage type "prettier" smoother overdrives and clean tones ( vaguely EJ/Gilmour/Timmons/Schon etc.) or is it primarily Modern/Tighter sounding ?

Demos suggest it has the versatility for either but just wondering what you guys think who actually live with them .....

Also- has anyone tried the Preamp directly into Cab IRs and EFX for Recording ( no Mic )- what were the results ?

the crunch channel on this thing is far from a filler channel and is actually one of the best parts of the preamp. I am using it 90% of the time with my cover band playing classic rock mostly. If you want that type of sound, it will do it in spades. I'd pair it with an EL 34 power amp. If you want the modern tight low end chunk you might be better off with something using KT88's or 6L6's.
