This made me laugh because this guy totally nerds it up and dissects Malmsteen but he does it with a sense of humour. Clearly having a bit of fun with it but with all the editing and graphic work he put into it, it's worth checking out. At the end of the day, I just play Malmsteen sloppy and that's good enough for me.. love scene at 12:46 lol.

This is without a doubt one of the most insightful videos I have ever seen! It's flipping brilliant!

Think about it - we've all been attempting to figure out Yngwie for about 30 years now & no one has done it. Until now.
Genius!!

I watched it yesterday a few times. Very good. I subscribed immediately.

The only thing i didn't really understand is the angle of the pick.. how are you using front vs back face of the pick? Does he mean he angles the pic towards the front down? If so, I do that too. I have never really looked at the up and down strokes this close though. I guess that explains how smooth he is. He combines legato in with his up-down-up strokes so that he always ends up on a down to start a phrase. The other thing YJM also does is use a heavier gauge pick I thought. Either way, I still suck at those scales. Wish he did one for YJM arpeggios as well!

Well, you can tell the angle by the way the thumb is in the video, ie thumb down towards the ground. Some guys do the reverse where there thumb points kinda upward too.

Simply try to hold the pick like EVH! Between thump and middle finger. It moves automatically in the described position. Now I know why he is holding it that way.

Fascinating!

Don't confuse pick slanting with pick angling. Yngwie is a one way pick slanter...down. Some guys are one-way pick slanters...up. Guys like Gilbert are two way pick slanters...up or down depending on the direction of the string change. If you haven't seen it, watch Troy's Talking The Code recorded webcast on his YouTube channel.

Thanks for the clarification.. I am naturally a downward facing picker but I also notice sometimes I cut the strings even more by having my pick almost 90 degree to the string. Maybe i am in part a "slashing picker" lol. Some good tips for sure. I watched some of Troy's channel clips. I need to slow down my alternate picking hand. I think the tendency is to feel like i have to go fast because my fingers are moving fast. What i end up with is unevenly picked notes or 4 picked notes per a 3 string pattern. Probably the biggest help/advice i have had in a while when it comes to guitar playing. This guy has some awesome vids.

A M A Z I N G video

Thanks for sharing. At first I was like - WTF is this this shit. Now I want to go watch all his lessons.

I really recommend watching the Talking the Code: Season 2, Episode 1 video. Lots of very useful knowledge in that video if you are into that kind of analytical stuff. It's a little long but totally worth it. Very well spoken and explained.

Seems cool, but I think he's selling lessons correct? I didn't see where he gets down to it, lots of talk.

Great series and the guy is a killer player.

And well, Yngwie used to be SO awesome. (I enjoyed his stuff with Alcatrazz more, but still)

He told me everything I need to know for $30... seems like the best $30 I ever spent on guitar lessons...

I dunno....I watched some of his videos and the cat can play but damn does he ramble. He just talks in circles as if he is explaining the genesis of the universe. Dont get me wrong......he can play and Im sure you can dig value out of his videos but I personally cant listen to his endless pontificating.

He does a series of "Masters in Mechanics" webinars that follow along with the series. 2 to 3 hours of live lessons with a group of players. Comes with tab and video packs for download. Some of those vids are on his YouTube channel. In the classes, he breaks down some of those classic REH vids with super slo- mo to show what those guys are really doing but never talk about, mostly because they don't really know they're doing it.. But the concepts are all in the Cracking The Code series.
