So, after too many outdoor gigs, where my tone seems to make it 2 feet out of my cabinet, and then dies. . .I'm considering a pedal I've never used in my 20 years of gigging. A Compressor.

I recently saw the Tonemerchants video of Justin Derricco demoing his rig, and he's using a Wampler Ego Compressor for a lot of things, including his overdriven lead tone. I had always just thought of compressors as something for clean tones and country pickin', but after hearing about the Wampler (with it's dry blend), and seeing Derricco use it with his overdrive tones, I'm questioning my previous stance on compressors.

I think it'd be a set and forget kind of thing, dialed in just enough to improve the feel, and help get better sustain.

Now, would it go in the loop or out front????

I use a Barber Tone Press in the loop. I set it as more of a boost with a slight bit of compression. Leave it on most of the night.

Running these dBx266's in the channel inserts of my VH4 for a bit of compression for the reasons you stated and also some gating on channel 3 and 4. Not just for country twang!

I've had lots of fun using a compressor after an overdrive - I'd give it a shot in the loop for sure.

"Manic Compression" would be a great name for a pedal. If I wanted more compression I'd go a hotter pickup. Then again I heard you mention the Axe FX, you can dial compression in that just how you like it.

I use the Rothwell LoveSqueeze. I call it my magic box. It makes everything easier. Solo's sing at low, medium, and higher gain settings...

So, what's the most preferred placement? Loop or in front? Steve, what's the deal with the channel inserts?

compressors pretty early on in the chain , front of the amp

love the barber tone press, the blend knob makes it very tweakable,

i've been really enjoying the mooer yellow comp as well, got it last month, not expensive//tiny footprint and sounds really good, nice squash and tone to it , opto compressor , think it's a clone of the diamond pedal

thought this was a thread about the Quicksand record "Manic Compression"

Barber Tone Press!! Bought one last year when my 20yr old Boss Compressor died. I tried both the Wampler and the Barber, both are great I just feel the Barbers controls have much more sweep of control!

I put mine out front at the end of the front chain. Works really well!

Each channel has it's own loop in the VH4, in addition to the parallel and serial loop which is mixed. Try one out front and in a loop and see what you think. I just use a bit of compression but mostly for gating. Some amps and compressors just don't work with one out front. Some can be noisy as shit.

I use an SP comp in front of all my drives - wasn't a compressor fan before, but the "blend" knob makes it very usable. Adds just a touch of sustain and "roundness" to the notes in front of my drives...love it

My favorite Comp was in the Ibanez UE405 rack unit. Had an old MXR DanaComp ….eh Im headed towards a Strymon OB-1 next. If I do not like that then I will look for an old Ibanez pedal that is suppose to be the same as the UE 405.
