i recently took out the reverb on my mark iv and was wondering if i could mod the amp so the reverb knob would be another gain stage, i was thinking for channel two. is there anyplace i could send it and have a mod like that done? i know mesa does mods but do they do anything like that?

Have you though of using an overdrive as a boost into R2? I do and it works great.

Which markIV do you have the IVA or IVB?

well i dont really need more gain. but i have a mark IVA and i do use a OCD to boost the front end but i would like to be able to get a little more gain out of channel two. I've heard about the rhythm mod for IIB's and IIC's and was wondering if someone could do a mod similar to that to the mark iv?

the IVB is supposed to have more gain on R2. You could send it to mesa to mode to a IVB on R2. I doubt you would get R2 to a IIC+ type gain, but you might.

well i don't need it to be a IIC+ type gain, i would just like to get more gain out of R2. so if i call up mesa who should i talk to?

I've never heard of a Mark 4 being modded before actually. Hmm. Didn't think there'd be enough room in there to add anything!

I have a mk IV b and couldnt imagine more gain..and thats using a tele with it!..I also have red stripe mk III coliseum and it shreds apart the IV...... :)

well i think the IVA's have a little less gain, i just want some more gain in R2! haha

Just put hotter tubes in the preamp sockets that being used by rhy 2. What tube is in V1 well effect the gain and tone of the amp more than anything else in the amp. This can change the character of the amp a lot.

Who knows it may do what you want ..... I am sure there is no modification, other wise a lot of people would have had it done. I suppose you could ask Mesa, but I would be very surprised.

thanks! do you guys know what preamp tubes work well for the mark iv? ive been thinking about getting a set of =C='s for the power tubes but im not sure what preamp tubes to get.

I can relate man, I had a IV A too, and R2 was just not my thing at all. I tried hotter preamp tubes, boosts, etc., and R2 it was just always "meh" for me. I've heard a couple people getting really good tones out of the IVB, but I haven't really heard any clips I really liked from R2 on the A. I would contact Mike Fortin or Jerry at FJA to see if they could do anything with it. I know I've seen both mod quite a few different kinds of amps. The Mark IV would be one asstompin amp if you could get something similiar to a Cali or FJA JCM tone on R2, plus the names are both known for their mods if you ever had to resell.

i completely forgot about FJA! i LOVE what jerry does to the 5150's and the JCM's, ill get ahold of him and see if he can up the gain on R2. I mean the mark IV would be beastly with a modded R2, it would have the fender cleans, the JCM mid gain, and the all out lead gain.

ive been seriously wondering if Jerry could do some kind of kickass mod to a mark IV. I wouldnt mind some more saturation and compression to the lead channel as well to make the amp a little less dry and forgiving plus a hot rodded R2 channel would be sweet.

I have a lot of old tubes .... over 5g worth. I have not bought new tubes much in a long time. All the tubes in my IV are 20 plus years old. So I have no advise on what to get.

I would be interested myself if Jerry or Mike did any IV modifications. I use rhy 2 a lot but do not try to make it sound like a Marshall or Modified Marshall.

You know we are talking about more gain on R2 (a common complaint on the mark IVA and IVB)?

nateispro: If you want to play with preamp tubes, contact mesa for a schematic, they should have what tube does what. Its different between the IVA and IVB. I have a IVA and IVB schematic if can't get one.
