How far does the gain channel go? I like doing some 80's hair metal bands but also looking for the classic overdrive jcm 800 sound. Is this amp too far away from wher I am going? I currently have a evh 3 half stack. Thanks

Going to be a bit more gainy than a stock 800, and way less than your 5153.

THE SL 2555 has more gain than the 2203 and more lowend and seemed a little bit darker sounding.
it can do the 80's stuff your looking for and the classic overdrive. i want to get another slash, i miss the one i had.
i also had a 5153 and had it for about 7 months and its a great amp too, ch3 has more gain than the slash, if your looking for a variety of tones go with the 5153. i personally would take the slash over it because i love the voicing of the slash.

I have a 2553 so keep that in mind, but the amp is perfect for 80's metal. There is alot of gain on tap, but much less than a 5150I II or III. I use an EQ in the loop and turn down the presence when my band does more modern metal.

Slash head or the original 2555 is great for Hard Rock, think Appetite for Destruction. Stick a good boost in front of it and it will get as nasty as anyone needs to get IMO.
