Hey guys, I have an opportunity to upgrade 4x12 cabs for kind of cheap. And could use some advice choosing.

What would be the better cab for playing very thrashy super jug jug jug jug kind of riffs and some classic rock?

Marshall MF280 or a Marshall 1960b?

My current cab is a very old school Jackson 4x12 cab.. those ones from the 80's with the red speakers... I don't think it sounds very good but at this point i'll hold on to it for sentimental reasons ;) Will be running it with a Pink taco for now but am eyeing out the JJ. Thanks!

The 1960B cabinet will break up much sooner than the other cabinet. If it were me I would grab the 1960B cabinet.

I'm gonna dissent and say the MF280. Its actually a high end cab for really cheap....and I say that because its all Baltic Birch with MDF back panel like a Diezel, Bogner etc and like vintage Marshall cabs. If the 1960B is a vintage old school from the 70s then run with it but otherwise MF280. The MF V30s are a really good less harsh version of a V30. I just pulled the G12 65s from my beat up 1960B and put them in the MF280 and I like this cab better, resonates more IMO. Also its a mono 16 ohm cab, thicker wire than the stereo 1960 cabs and that also improves the response.

What speakers are in the cabs?
I think the mf280 is an oversized cab

MF cab is a little bigger and will probably sound deeper with more bass. I think it's a better built cab and I like the speakers (I have them in 2 other 4x12s). That said if you are playing classic rock the 1960b might be right up your alley.

I have a 1960A cab, but I replaced all of the stock speakers. The construction and quality is nothing to write home about. It's not impecable like a Mesa, Orange, or Bogner is, but it does sound good in the room and it does particularly well under the mic, IMO. It's got a bright, aggro and up-front kinda sound. The stock T-75's were alright, but they didn't quite get along with my already scoopy-sounding amps. They do thrash quite well with something like a Marshall, 5150, or similarly-voiced amp sitting on top of the cab, though.

The MF cab is pretty damn good. I wouldn't say the construction is much better than the standard 1960's, but the stock speakers, be it Vintage 30MF's or K100's are stellar for down-tuned chuggah chuggah, and the oversized design kinda lends itself more to the modern kinda tone with the huge bottom-end.

Thanks guys for all the replies. This really helps quite a bit!
