any good, and if not, is it a decent mod platform?

read a little bit on them, sounds like maybe people like the version with EL-34's?

The EL-34 version sound much better. maybe not all that great of a plator for modding? with 7 preamp tubes, midi, power reduction etc there's not much space on left in there, and it's got a LOT going on in there. I've heard the insides are a bit fragile when working on them too. Not to say they can't be modded by Guys like Trace at Voodoo etc, etc, but if you're looking for an amp to mod yourself, it's not where I'd start.

They sound great and very flexible. The only weak point is the MIDI circuit. If you end up getting one, really like it, and plan on keeping it....I would pick up a spare MIDI board from KorgUSA. I can provide you with the part number. There is a modification to get the power from a seperate TX for the MIDI. It currently gets it from the heaters, which is the cause of the MIDI board to sometimes hang, all the channels LEDs light up and you can't get sound through it.

If you need the schematics for either the 5881 or EL34 version, drop me an email at mike at fortinamps dot com and I'll shoot them over to you

Cheers,
Mike
