Marshall amp in a box pedals

Anybody have any positive experience with amp in a box type pedals? I want to get a hot rodded Marshall flavor after selling my Splawns but I was wondering if I can grab a pedal to do those type tones(JCM800 esq tones). I had an Angry Charlie awhile back that wasnt bad but I was wondering if they have made any improvements? The Bogner La Grange and a couple of the Victory pedals look nice unfortunately there isnt anywhere local to try them out. I may just end up getting a kit build marshall type since I've always wanted to learn more about amps' inner workings but just wanted to see what you guys think.

I have an original Bogner Red and an old Marshall Guv’nor. Like them both and they’re very good at what they do. I’m on the list for a Kingsley Harlot so we’ll see if they live up to hype. My expectations are pretty high.

Yep, exactly what I was going to throw out as a suggestion. That pedal sounded like an amp to me when I plugged into it and I had the original one. The new ones have more adjustments.

Check out PedalPalFx. I have the Gold Overdrive. I can't get a bad sound out of it.

Anyone have experience with the Lovepedal Purple Plexi?

kingsley or comparable victory preamp pedal into an fx loop return depending on marshall tones desired.

At this point id get a real marshall based tube preamp pedal instead of a jfet box.

My buddy just got the Tone City Model M, very cool pedal and cheap to boot.

I have had a Marshall Guv.nor that was a cool pedal, but sold it when I could get a very close sound with my Hermida Distortion. The Kingsley Harlot that was mentioned above, while it has some good bite, I don't really hear a dead on Marshall sound in it

The Bogner Lagrange gets great reviews in sound, though I have read of some quality issues.

Have had a bunch. Current favorite is the newer small Bogner Blue. Mmmmmm... yummay! Not plugging into my Strymon Sunset, Friedman Dirty Shirley pedal, etc as much since blue showed up. I had 2 or 3 each of the older XTC pedals. Of those the red was my favorite. But this new blue is soooo sweet.

Didn't care for the LaGrange when A/B'd next to a bunch of other pedals. Seemed too loose and saggy, less defined than other great Marshall-in-a-box pedals.

Out of all the ones I've tried, the best has been the Barber Compact Direct Drive.

Yup. The original blue was like a TS9 or something. Couldn't get a decent amount of gain. That's why I prefered the Red. But the new blue has closer to red levels of gain, with that sweet blue tone. I think I like the new blue better than the real XTC that I had.

I'm no expert but, I really like the MI Audio Super Crunch Box ver.2 I recently picked up in a trade. Very tweak able with the mode and EQ controls.

I know I've got at least the original Carl Martin Plexitone (big version) which I like, an OCD which I haven't used in a while, and a mad Professor One.

An important question is what are you going to run the pedal into? That will really impact which pedals work and how well they work.

Very true. I've had several Plexitones and OCDs throughout the years. They were killer in some amps and not so much in others. I currently have a red OCD and it's not going anywhere. It likes Marshall plexi style amps better than Blackface ones.
