Can anyone give me any first hand experience with this head? I would be looking at getting mild brown tones, but mostly boosting the gain channel for hair/thrash/death metal tones.
Ideally, just wanting something to turn on instead of my 100w JVM late at night, and something smaller to haul.
Also, what's a fair price for this head on the used market?

Yes no loop and no reverb are the biggest grievances with this amp. Not a huge concern for me as I'm not a big effects user.
The 6V6s are a big draw though...

I dont see why it wouldn't do what you wanted. I've often been told that 6V6's have a better character than EL84's, so that you may want to look into.

I looked at these, (on paper, never played it), and the FX loop was a deal-breaker for me.

I absolutely LOVED the Blackstar HT-5 I had. For some reason, I found it to be the best of the Blackstars, in terms of tone, (had an HT-20, and HT-50, the 5-watt just killed them, I thought and, oddly enough, sounded more tubey than those - don't ask me how they did it). However, you definitely need an EQ in the loop to boost the low end.

I boosted the front end, put an EQ in the loop, and it sounded FANTASTIC through a 4x12! The Blackstar can typically be had for under $300.

Other choices, maybe a Jet City, or even an EVH LBX, or Orange OR15, (though not "brownish").

The dsl40c was like ice pick when it first came out. the guys over at the Marshall forum had a very simple mod, where you desoldered half diode, or cap...one of those parts :dunno: that mod tames some of the high end shrill. I'm assuming the 15 is as ice-picky....

The HTR5 Blackstar, I had, was nice. Really nice actually. With a boost, it'd maybe get you to thrash territory. Don't know if you could gig with it or anything, unless you mic it up. I needed cash, just sold mine with matching 112 cab for 3bills.

That Son of Yeti  I bet that thing will thump.

Get a Jet City and give it the PsycoDave mod.

Thanks guys, I've heard some pretty good tones online from the this head and some pretty lackluster ones too, so I think it has to do with user tweaking ability.

I used to have an HT5 as well right when they first came out. I thought it was good, definitely needed a boost, otherwise I thought it was somewhat bland without one. I also didn't really like or understand the ISF knob. I know what it was supposed to do I just wasn't hearing it. It changed the mids a bit but that's not all it was changing.

I'm wondering if the lack of an effects loop on the DSL would stop me from using an EQ in front? Or if the results would differ that much?
The modern Marshall ice pick treble is another possibility, but I've learned to tame that buy have higher presence settings and lower treble settings.

I currently have a line on one of these that the seller wants $500 Canadian for which is approximately $390 USD. I'm going to see if he can knock off another 20 to 50 bucks and then possibly give it a shot.
This is currently the only Marshall amp that offers 6V6s which I think might be fuller, smoother and fatter sounding then el84s?
