I've got a quick question about these amps. Did Marshall ever change them at some point during their lifespan? For some odd reason, I really like the tone of these amps and am thinking about picking one up.

They did change the channel switching at some point..the older ones (pre-86?) had a problem with the 'clean' channel bleeding into the the OD channel.

They changed them twice. in '85 they changed the preamp, and they sound a lot different, then in '87 they fixed the "bleed over" problem mentioned. The best ones to look for are the 87-90. Great sounding heads IMHO. The clean sucks, and the loop kinda sucks though.

+1 ^

I think they had more gain after the change in '87 too.

I had a late one for a while and it was a cool amp. If you look carefully, they don't call it a "clean" channel. They are "normal" and "lead." If you crank the gain/volume on the "normal" channel, it sounds fairly similar to the single channel 800s. The "lead" channel just picks up where "normal" leaves off.

just to add a little more information, the original early ones had a design flaw that you cannot fix without ripping the PC board out and putting a new one in there......I know because I own one and it sounds like complete shit. It has the channel leaking and sound pretty bad in general. The Later ones 87 and up would be the ones to look for. They sound killer IMHO.

I hope this helps

Yea - one more note is the "normal" channel doesn't have mid control and could be pretty lifeless. I had an '88 2210 and it was my main amp for 15 years. I used a Rockman compressor with the treble boost on the normal/clean channel and it gave the sound a little more life.

I had I believe an '87 2210 and it was killer. It nailed the Schenker tone.I retolexed it in snakeskin just before I sold it a few years ago.If anyone knows anything about this one or it's whereabouts shoot me a message,I'd love to have that one back.

Werd. Mine is a '90 and sounds really good. My other guitar player uses it and it mixes really well with the Superbass.

THe trick to these amps is keeping the boost volume on 10, and gain above 5 but below 9, and usin the Master Volume to taste. They're also pretty bright. The treble on mine never gets above 4.
