Marshall JMP-1?

There are a few on evilbay all around $400- $500, which I'd think is too high?

I've had good luck with my old ADA MP-2, and my newly acquired Tech 21 preamps, so I'm looking at a few other 1U units, like the JMP-1 and Triaxis, though I'm more into Marshall tone than Mesa's.

I thought the gain sounds were pretty cool, though I didn't dig the cleans at all. Too nasally sounding with a weird mid thing you can't dial out.

I loved my Voodoo amps modded JMP-1. Made the JMP-1 WAYYY more usable. If i got another JMP-1, it would definitely be modded by Trace @ Voodoo.

I had one I used with a Marshall 9100 pwr amp, and a bit of a BBE, which did good things for that particular combo, but I never really liked the direct outs, they sounded ok for clean stuff, but I prefered a mike for dirty stuff. I felt the same about the Triaxis. I used it with the same pwr amp, but without the BBE. Mesa's dont play well with BBE's at any kind of volume. The best results I've had for direct has been a Marshall SE-100, they are kinda hard to find, but work well. You can run any head into it, and use it as a load for the amp with no cabinet. It is an attenuator, and has different axial positions for mike simulations. I still prefer a 57/421 combo over it for high gain stuff, but it may be different for lower gain, not sure. The direct outs make a lot of things easier for sure, but dont sound the same as a good mike setup, into a really good mike-pre IMO

Given the going prices, even without a Voodoo mod, I'm looking at around $1K to acquire both a JMP-1 and Triaxis. As I'm still (also) looking for a good multi effects which would be at least $400, its getting close to the Axe-Fx Standard price range.

Every time I do the math, and look at the features of the various options, the Axe-Fx seems to come out the winner. FWIW, the Axe-Fx has several JMP-1 and Triaxis presets among its ever increasing list of amps, plus the effects and the ability to loop in an external device (like my preamps) anywhere in the signal chain. Guess I'm fighting the inevitable and just need to save my pennies and get another Ultra.

Short term, I think I stay with my current set-up, and get the Damage Control Glass Nexus (big f'n pedal) while keeping an Ultra on the top of the GAS list (maybe whatever Cliff is working on will be available by the time I have the cash for it!)

I'm gonna fire up my JMP-1 just to remember what it was like. I remember liking it for rhythm most and actually found the emulator out quite decent, paired with a good studio pre of course, like an API or Great River. I'll fire it up soon just to give a better opinion but I can tell ya now it's somewhat dated and the Axe-Fx would step all over it.

Gene, thanks - I found these too, but they're rare; new about $1300 so back into Axe-Fx territory. Never heard one, do you have one or had one?

1. I have one
2. I got it mint on ebay with the footswitch for like $600
3. It's not very rare
4. It's in my top three preamps overall, DEF #1 in cleans and mid gain though.
5. It's ridiculously good, and it's clean and elegant in the guts.

Why don't you just buy an ADA Microcab simulator or something if you're so concerned with direct recording???

I thought about the ADA Microcab (and Microcab II) and the Ampulator. This was when I had an RM4. My Tech 21 stuff works direct (as does my MP-2), and a few of these preamps I'm investigating have direct outs as well as the new modelers, so I didn't think I'd need a cab emulator.

I've got a 6U rack case with only my MP-2 in it, so I'm thinking what other classic / vintage preamps could I acquire to fill the case that would work with my Bose FRFR, so I started to look at what was out there. FWIW, I keep ending up with the Axe-Fx being the best option for the money, unless there is a real killer vintage preamp that is worth owning (and getting a cab emulator) .

I found that the JMP-1 did metal rhythms great (80's to now), especially modern / extreme metal rhythms, but the cleans were pretty abysmal and the lead tones just didn't get the job done.... To me, kind of was the opposite of the Triaxis (great cleans, great leads, poor rhythm) for metal
