What do you know about the Marshall JMP Super Bass? metal panel, toggle switches, not rockers. can these be modded to have a master volume? what else should I know? what's a good price?

I have owned one .... personally I feel putting a master on it would kill a lot of it's magic. If you want that just buy a JCM 800 or JMP with the master stock.

The JMP with no master / 4 hole is actually my favorite amp. The poweramp needs to be turned up to get the sound. Putting a master on it the poweramp never roars & grinds like they can. Your D60 actually has a lot in common sound wise with these. The JMP is more organic, etc. I would be completely happy with either.

The Superbass is a great amp, no question. It's very, very similar to a Superlead, just a few parts in the preamp are different. They can be easily changed to a Superlead, or left alone and still sound great. I would not add a MV, but you have to crank it to get the goods, so get a good attenuator. If you're looking to buy one, make you know how much of it is original what has been replaced, if anything. Makes a huge difference in value and sound, depending on what's been done. If you have photos, especially gut shots, post them here for some feedback.

wow, that is not what I expected to hear at all. I can see the similarity in the clean tones, but the VHT is so gainy. granted, I couldn't turn it up enough to "get the goods" in a little shop in manhattan, but it didnt even start to crunch with the inputs jumped and on about 3 or 4.

the NMV 4 input JMP is the one I played. it looked very original and un-modded. guy swore it was all original, but I really have no way to tell. I can stop by the shop and take pics in the next few days. price seemed high, though. $1900, probably ridiculous NYC pricing. is a Super Bass as bright/cutting as most Marshalls? I'm sure i've said this a million times already, but I'm looking for a less gainy/more organic/more tube power amp crunch type head to run in stereo with my VHT. The VHT is so cutting I'm trying to find something a little darker/warmer. Top contender so far is an early Ampeg V4 reverb, 2 input, with a master volume mod.

actually a quick ebay search makes that price seem average....

here's a pic of the front:

I meant the upper mids and where it crunches. You can get it closer than a lot of amps that can do high gain. You can get it similar sounding .... but that is only ballpark. The Fryette in LESS mode the Marshall does not have as much gain.

You should figure out the year. I beleive that sometime during 1973, then went to a PCB layout and so those are worth a little less than something a little older.

I paid about $1,400 for my 1971 Superbass a few years ago. The amp market is in the toilet, you should be able to get a good deal.

yeah, i mean, I'm not looking to duplicate my current head. I absolutely love the VHT, I'm looking for something to compliment it in stereo that has a different sound. warmer, darker, less gain. more power amp breakup than preamp gain.

I can't believe this thread made me think of Nicki Minaj. UGH, I need to stop letting my girlfriend control the radio.

yeah, i've seen those things in a couple shops around here. very interesting looking, be curious to hear them. nice concept!

so I went back to the shop today and asked about the SB. Shop says it's a 74, and was originally a PCB amp, but has been modded to be point to point. They didn't know who did the mod, but said the wiring looks really clean. It was kind of busy, so I didn't ask to see the guts.

I'm sure it's a cool amp and the replaced point to point board probably sounds great, but IMO, its far from an original Marshall at this point and should be priced accordingly. In other words, no way it's worth $1,900, especially in this market.

Yep, I agree.

I would rather have the point to point, however, it IS NOT STOCK and the price should reflect that. Just my opinion, but who knows who had their hands in that amp, and the store wants you to pay the going rate for "stock", when it is not.

nice amp. I wouldnt mod it.. its a collectors item friend.

well, as I said above, it's already been modded from the original PCB to a point-to-point wiring, so it's not really a collector's item anymore, I wouldn't think.

in that case ..cool . I'll mod it. I can do what ever you want prob at half the price.

Do not pay that much for a replaced board. Just check ebay you could get a real point to point orig one for that or less and a 74 and later pcb for much less. That one will be hard to sell and you will never get 1900 for it maybe half that
