Marshall JVM Kicks ass!

I spent a great deal of time with a JVM today, an amp I've always liked. It really can do anything. I thought OD2 kicked all kinds of ass. I could not get enough of the EL34 growl that the amp produces. I have never owned a marshall, but I was just falling in love with every tone it does. The growl, girth and just meanness of the on a 7 string, boosted or unboosted, was just fantastic, and would probably kill in a mix. I guess what I've realized is, and I'm sure it is true for all of you....Your taste in tone changes over time/all the time. I still love my Fryette/5150 rig, the Fryette really is my sound, but I never used to be a fan of EL34 based high gain amps...I guess it all changed. The cleans were fantastic, the mid gain channels were superb, and again, the growl and brutality of the high gain channel was just insane. Again, maybe it is just because I have never owned a marshall, so this is all "new" to me I guess, but it was great. Also, boosted a jcm800 with a maxon with a 7 string...Again, just an insanely brutal tone that would probably destroy in a mix. I'm surprised I don't see more guys going back to the "roots" of high gain amps with rigs like this, especially with tuned down guitars being so popular nowadays, it really is easy to get lost in the mix with all the bass heavy amps made today...Anyways, carry on..:)

Yeah it's a pretty good amp. But don't get to hung up on the EL34's in that amp. Something tells me that if it had 6L6's or 5881's (like all Marshalls originally had in the beginning) you wouldn't be able to differentiate between them.
With the JVM, most of what you are hearing is the killer preamp and it's uber gain and compression levels.

i agree, It does have TONS of gain...it literally has more gain than any amp I've ever heard. It is almost unboostable as well. I had to run the gain at around 9 oclock, with a tubescreamer with the level no higher than noon, and obviously the gain at zero..Completely insane. I just loved the grind and growl of the midrange in the marshall. Say what you want about the Poweramp, there is something to be said for it. That amp with a different poweramp would not sound the same. It sounds like a marshall for a reason. It has the "El34" flavor if you will that is inherent with almost every amp with that style of Poweramp in my experience...Just sounds better to me though for some reason than others :)

I still want one of these, I think they are GREAT amps, have only played them a few times, and have loved it every time.....

Best live and studio tones I've ever gotten...needless to say it's my favorite amp I've owned. And that includes alot of stuff from production line to boutique. Pretty much ended my amp gas since I bought it when they first came out. Sounds good with every cab I've ever ran it through. GB's, Vintage 30's, Gh 30's...even made me a fan of 75's which I hated before. The last amp roundup I went through I had the SigX, my second Splawn QR and the JVM...all were fantastic amps. I stuck with the JVM. Me and the amp just clicked.

Since I have the Kemper and profiles my 5153. Makes me want to try and trade for a jvm ;-)

Noooo! just find one to borrow and profile. Then give it back. :D

Between the JVM410H and the Vintage Modern 2266 I chose the Vintage Modern. There's gain and there's tone; the Vintage Modern has all the gain and tone in spades. The JVM has piles of gain but very little usable tone.

I've played several and they are killer amps for the money. I really like the jvm 210

I liked the JVM410H too, played a lot with our other guitarist's rig when he had one, but always felt something's "missing" or "not quite right" with the tone, as I remembered the sound and feel I got from my 2266.

One thing especially with that particular amp was that his amp did not like pedals at all, no SD-1's / MXR's anything basically in front of the amp. May be it was a grounding issue or something like that, but it sure was quite unbearable to boost the amp with the volume higher than around 2 on the master volume.

The dude actually ended up selling his JVM in favor of a 2466 and man that head has tone for days compared to the JVM.

This is just my humble opinion.

You guys are killing me with the 2466 talk. I have wanted one since they came out and still haven't been able to squeeze one in. Bah...

Here are some local Memphis guys with a JVM, kinda Tool-ish vibe.

Sweet JVM action and toanz!

Owned one from the beginning and still enjoy playing it, just a good solid amp that brings a ton to the table.

Yes we know Mr. Coffee Table Amp Man. ;) :D

I have a JVM210H and really dig it. It does have alot of gain so I just run it at about 11 o'clock. Noon tops. With ODs in front, I pull the gain all the way down on the pedal and just crank the level.

I went through a lot of high gainers for years, and have ended back where I started 20 years ago with a boosted 800. Man those amps are mean as hell. Haven't tgried the jvm, but would like to see how the modern ones hold up to the old ones..
