My decision has come down to a JVM 205H, 2525H, or 50w EL34 EVH. I could possibly go for the JVM410 again, but not sure because I've only played the 410, not the 205. Will I be missing too much without the extra channels of the 410? At this point, my only concern about the EVH is that the demos all sound very bright and not sure how much clean headroom it has. The 2525 sounds great in the demos, but I tried the 100w before and it seemed a little darker than I expected. I would appreciate some guidance if you know these amps pretty well.

The EVH will do way higher gain with LESS noise than the Marshalls on the red channel.

Personally, I don't like Marshall's silver tolex, so I've been keeping an eye out for a 2553 in black (50W), but if they do the 2525H in black, I'd be interested too.

I would say, it depends on the music you play, and your wants/needs. I have owned the 2525, JVM205H (3 times), and EVH 50 watt (twice). They all have their place. The 2525, I hated. Bottom end was loose, and flabby, and I just didn't care for the voicing, or the cathode bias. It ran way too cold, with no adjustability. I would have liked to try different tubes.

What style music? I've owned the 210h and now a 5150iii 50 watt.

How is the EVH EL34 50w with overdrives in front, and does it have a good FX loop?

It is pretty much down to preference and several guys have asked what music you play.

This is a similar thread that might give you some more ideas.

Ooops. That is your thread too   Oh well, you get the idea.

I'm taking the EVH off of the list. I dislike it. The 2525 has moved up because it was satisfying to play. I sold some more gear today to raise money, so my budget has expanded a little more. I will have to reconsider everything and start looking at some other amps. Gear shopping has just gone from fun to more work to do!

That is part of the disease

But yeah. As you can see - it is all down to preference at this point. I'm mean, I've heard some really nice clips of the JVMs but I just don't seem to gel with them personally. Conversely, I really like the EVHs. Was not super fussed over the 2525s I've played but I can see why people like them. Almost got the EVH 5153 100 but ended up with a Splawn Quick Rod. The customer service from Scott Splawn is what sealed the deal for me (and I bought it used). Things like that are important too.

I had a Splawn Quickrod 2016 model. The FX loop wasn't that great, but everything else was really good. I really wasn't getting the Marshall vibe from it to be honest. I actually liked the Competition better than the Quickrod. It had a better feel and a better distortion. The Quickrod sounded harder, less organic to me. Heck now that it comes to mind I should really consider a Competition.

In every amp always consider the preamp tubes being used too. One crappy tube can make a $5,000 amp sound like shit. My Splawn is organic I can tell you that. Most Splawn owners are going to agree. I DO run my QR at half power. Gear 2, OD2, Gain on 2 oclock. And I've got the right tubes in there. Ballin.

But if you've owned one then you know what you had and not everyone gels with Splawns.

I loved both my Quick Rod, and Competition. Competition, more, for it's simplicity.

You're right. You can always rest assured, you'll get a ripping amp with a Splawn. I loved AC/DC tones in gear 1, and serious thrash tones in gear 2. I rarely used gear 3!

Red knob Fender Twin and a Rat...Tone so good you’ll think you’re getting the 72 virgins without even having to martyr yourself.
