I have an opportunity to purchase a Marshall JMP with this mod. I know of the lead mod, crunch mod, dookie mod. There is information out there but really nothing I would consider substantial. For those who have experience with this mod or any of Martin's work please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance for your answers.

The Crunch mod is the Dookie (Green Day) mod. The Lead mod is the original Aldrich mod. These were developed by Martin, Bob Bradshaw and John Suhr when they owned Custom Audio Amps. As the name would imply, the Crunch is somewhat lower gain than the Lead mod but both are nice. Martin does top shelf work in the chassis.

I have a 100 watt Marshall 1959 head with the Golub crunch mod, and the guy I bought it from many years ago said it was modded for Warren Cuccurullo.. . (Missing Persons/Zappa/Duran Duran) . . . I'm not 100% sure that was true, but he sounded fully knowledgable and serious at the time . . Anyway, great crunchy Marshall and very cool amp. I have so many modded-Marshalls that I'm going to possibly sell that one someday but have no idea what it'd be worth. Good luck! Eric

I read that Doug Aldrich had a Marshall (or several) that had the lead mod and it was his go to for a while. I did see clips on the crunch mod but everyone is playing f'n Green Day riffs. Would love to hear it with the volume rolled off a bit, hitting the front end with a boost.

Hey Dan.

Thanks for posting those clips. Seems like the way to go would be adding the extra preamp tube for an additional gain stage. I know he does that on the lead mod but not the dookie/crunch.

Sounds like you really have to crank the Dookie mod to get some hair on it which for Billy Joe in a stadium prolly isn't hard to do.

I can tell you as a guy with a JMP 2203 with extra pre-tube its all you'll ever need with or without pedals.

The pics and schem's I've seen don't have any extra tubes on the Dookie or Crunch. Crunch is not as gainy and bright as Dookie. Really pretty basic mods if you know anything about the Marshall Preamps and how to get more gain out of them..very clean work on the couple I have seen.

I have a 100 watt Marshall Super Lead that has the SE Lead mod that was done by Martin. Bitching amp but I have zero use for it anymore.
