Bill Kelliher of Mastodon talks about their new album and Friedman amps.

"Oh, man... Well, I can't tell you guys because no one's heard it yet, but there's a lot of really awesome stuff that I'm really proud of that I wrote, that I'm just excited about. It's hard to explain; when I write a riff and I record it with a proper amp, which is always the Friedman amps...To me, it's when I get in the studio and I start recording it with my Butterslax amp, or the JJ, or the HPE, it's just fucking pure magic. The engineers are always like - for the past three-four records since I've been using those amps, [producer] Nick Raskulinecz, I remember I plugged in the JJ, he's like, 'Wow, what the fuck are you using man? And I think that's when he started hitting up Friedman, like, 'Hey, give me some free shit.' Like, 'What? Who are you?'. Yeah, shit's that good, it sounds good, sounds really good. So, I don't know, my favorite part is all the stuff that I've written, and once it hits tape with my favorite amps, and I know that it's because I'm a nerd, man. I have to hear it when it hits the tape, and it fucking captures what I'm hearing from my guitar to the amp to the speaker, I have to hear that translates to tape"

Good stuff and props to Friedman

I don't really ever think about jamming with anyone in the bands I listen to, with the exception of Bill and/or Brent. I think it'd fun as fuck to jam with either one of them.

Can't wait for the next album. IMO, they get better and better each album and I've LOVED everything since Crack The Skye. I dig their earlier stuff, but I'm much more into the heavy 70's prog thing they've been doing since CTS. I really wore out CTS, I don't think I listened to anything else for a year after it came out. Caught them on tour when they were doing it in it's entirety, which was fucking great. Caught them again with AIC and Deftones. It was an arena show and I had concerns going in that the arena was going to eat up a lot of the sound, but it was the total opposite, one of the best sounding shows I've ever been to and all three bands were spot on. There's not many things better than hearing Cantrell blaring at 120DB in a huge room, clear as a bell.

I couldn't believe the first time I heard Mastodon on headphones at Barnes and Noble (Yes, been that long. LOL). It was like this wall of awesome sludgy, heavy, tone with all of this feeling. I couldn't put my finger on what I was hearing but was like Sabbath, Pink Floyd, AIC, etc. all jammed together.
