Dear Rig talkers... i am planning to getta OD for tidying up my VHT for much "Picking" tone to it.. i was wondering if the Maxon OD808 would be a good one? i am also looking at for a closest OD and transparent boost that would retain the character of the amp...

maxons are great, but aren't transparent. they have the typical mid hump of tubescreamer-based pedals. they tighten up the bottom end and add some nice mids. i love my maxon OD9. for clean boost, an MXR microboost is hard to beat. want both in a pedal? voodoo labs sparkle drive, which i also have. basic 808 sounds but with a clean knob to dial in half clean/half dirty signal (not the same as turning down the gain, but rather 2 circuits) and can be all the way up for a clean boost. this may be your ticket.

I use a maxon OD808 and love it. But I agree it cuts some low end and adds midrange, but I like that about it.

I use a TIM, and not because tis harder to get but because its the most transparent next to the analogman KOT.

FWIW, Id get a TIM, I like cause it sits higher, and can be used on your Clean channel to give you more tonal options.

try the od9 man. It rules big time.

i have been using it for about a year now. I can't stand to play with out it!

I like the Bad Monkey way more than the Tube Screamer types...

It's much clearer, open, and dynamic...

Oh so many OD's to choose from...

The OD808 is not transparent at all. But its a classic sound. They can really tighten up the bottom for picking. They also add some mids and some compression - great for leads

For something transparent, Id concider...

Paul C Tim/Timmy
Fromel Death Is Gain
Barber Direct Drive - tho this one adds a touch of low mids

Would the Analogman KOT get too compressed like maxon od808? i have heard too compressed would get mistakes hidden up easily.. as the 50CL which i have has gotta very open tone which is sick to play .. would the analogman get me to have slightly more gain "gritty" mode and still open with very dynamic picking "cheek" "check" wheel dilly wheel dilly tone?  thanks alot guys !!

And am happy to know how my amp reacts to a maxon OD808 ! it sounds nice !! but it seems much transparent for me as it didnt quite change the tone of my amp when gain is rolled back to zero. but what i realised it that it have gotten my amp tone on a brighter side when balance at half and tone at half... grittyness and saturation takes place when i turned the gain at higher and i would hear the picking that goes "small chomps" kinda tone very nice and i am turning on for a maxon od808... as i would like to have other OD with different character to it as in mentioned more open lesser compression as possible with good picking attack and grittyness of gain input.

Thanks for the response guys !! very nice people here :D

+1 on a Tim or Timmy, pretty darn transparent and doesn't seem to add alot of compression. I have a Timmy.

I also own a Maxon OD-9 and OD-808, but I think the timmy would be the best for this application....
