I just picked a couple up off eBay. What fantastic microphones! I've used most popular dynamics, and nothing gives a bigger tone than one of these. The e609, in comparison, is bright, thin, and generally lacking in tone. Haven't tried the e906 in a while, but I hear it's supposed to have a similar capsule.

Anyone else using these?

These have a great reputation...prices are pretty high from what I've seen, can I ask what you got yours for? Wouldn't mind having one of these myself. I do have the e906 and I'm not too impressed, I think your sumation of the 609 is similar to how I feel about the 906. I was disapointed.

Here's the link that convinced me. Here's a shot of the capsules. Seems like the 906 with roll off should get close, but I figured if I wanted to do it right I should just go for the original.

I bought the two together. Actually, one is a Black Fire 509 and the other a U3 (same microphone but different name). The seller didn't know if they worked as he hadn't used them in years, but I figured it was eBay and had nothing to lose. As it turns out, the foam inside the U3 totally deteriorated, which allowed the capsule to break the solder connections. I soldered it back together and it's all set, and after a quick call to Sennheiser, I've got new foam on the way too. In total, I paid $570 shipped for both. They're not mint, but all in all, I think a pretty good deal.

If you're reasonably handy and on a tighter budget, you could probably find a capsule for a lot less and just stick it in an e609 enclosure.
