I found out yesterday that my Ampeg SVT410HLF bass cab was made of MDF. It was made during a run from 2000-2005 when Ampeg used MDF on most of their cabs. Vox is now using MDF in their AC30C1 and AC15C1 (earlier AC15CC's were MDF too). Marshall used to just have MDF backs, not some of their cabs like the 1936 are all MDF.

So what are you guy's thoughts on MDF for guitar and bass cabs? Should I be disappointed that my Ampeg 410 cab is made from MDF?

MDF is really dense, and pretty sturdy, once assembled. I think this can be a case of cutting costs, but also an improvement to tone (which is subjective). I still prefer Birch cabs though.

MDF's density may lean it toward bass where a more neutral reproduction can be desired.

for guitar I think MDF is flat and lifeless I like the cabinets to sing also.

One word comes to mind with MDF..............

Weight.

I was waiting to see a few responses before I revealed that I was very disappointed to learn my Ampeg cab was MDF. The cab does sound good, but can be a bit muddy and is pretty darn heavy. Its one of those ignorance was bliss things, where I was perfectly happy with the cab, then I learn it is MDF and I am upset. Still glad I know.

I find plywood tends to resonate better than MDF in general. I am replacing the back on my Marshall 2556A 212 cab. I want to change out the connector and don't want to cut into the original MDF back. I am very curious if I notice a difference in sound with the new back.
