Hey Guys,

Of the Mesa Boogie 4x12 cabinets which do you prefer and why?

The Half Open Half closed Road King 4x12 cabinet loaded with 2 V30s and 2 C90 speakers?

or the Standard Rectifier 4x12 cab loaded with v30 speakers?

(Only talking about these two, please don't go down the road of "Fuck either one of those I prefer Brand X cab". ;)

Hey Brad, the Roadking 4x12 is a great sounding cab imo! I love the unique design of it, because the internal divider board splits the interior airspace and it doesn't have the same boomy/woofy complaints (by some) as the regular oversized even though it's the same dimension.

I wish it had been designed like the older half back cabs because Mesa would include(?) the removeable backboard so you could convert it to partial open back or fully closed whenever you wanted.

But Mesa will make you a full size backboard if you want one, it's just too bad they don't include it with the original purchase like the old half backs (I assume the backboard was included with the older half back design).

Why not both?

Actually, If I had to pick one, I'd go with the halfback.

Their closed backs are built almost too well. I wish they were a little more resonant like a Marshall cab. I have to put a 160 watt quad of 6550's into my oversized recto slant to get it warming up. It's pretty directional for a rear-mount too.

Either one would be a good choice though.

You kill me Gene

I really want to try a RK, like the half open idea myself. For close bcak I perfer the Stiletto traditional cab to the Rectifier size.

Actually, I like all sizes of cabs. I think cabs rock.

When I was a n00b, I thought the cab was the amp

I would go with the Road king cab myself. I like mixing C90's with V30's. I also like the sound of a closed back section with an open back section. Its one of the things I love about my metal grill halfback cab....

I agree.

I'm much more of a traditional closed back 4x12 guy myself...

tough question Brad,

I 've two Rectfier Standard and two Rectifier Stilletto (traditional)

If price/size/weight doesn't matters, I'd go with the Roadking cab :)

(so I voted for the RK) Its not so focused and has more "range"

I like mixing V30s with other speakers, and I really like the MC-90s, so RK for me

I personally like the sound of the older 4x12 Recto straight front slants more then the regular slanted cabs. For whatever reason, they don't sound as woofy or boomy as the current Recto oversize cabs, Dunno why that is, but...yea.

I also have V30's and CL80's in an x pattern in my cab.

Order a mills acoustics closed back afterburner.

It will crush the mesa's. Thats all I use now.

If i had a dime for every piece of gear that came out over the years that crushed Mesa I'd be a zillionare. And yet, Mesa is still here and still in high demand both new and used.

I have a road king 4x12 and a traditional/stiletto 4x12. IMO, it's not even close. The Road King sounds so much better to me than the traditional. Bigger, clearer, tighter, tons of low end. I love the cab. The traditional cab is all mid range, not as dark, but missing the low end. The Road King is my go to cab. I have an oversized recto 2x12 as well (I know, not the same as the 4x12) and it's nice, but currently 3rd on the depth chart by a long shot. All low end, too boomy and not as well defined as either of the others (I felt the same way about the oversized 4x12).

I like my Traditional sized Mesa cab. The sound projection is immense. Not boxy or boomy sounding like the oversized. I like my tone to cut like a knife, so the abundance of midrange is welcome. Lots of lowend response with these cabs too. (I keep my bass at 6 and resonance at 5)
I'm not into having an overly thick sounding tone, and the traditional sized tracks so tightly and percise.

as you already know it will depend on your amp..

but for just a "generic" answer...mesa standard recto for me!

i love that option thou,..of being able to "tweek" your sound by adding.subtracting back board..

If I were you, and going with all Mesa cabs, I would use the Stand. for your dry tone and the open for you wets- left and right.
