Yesterday I bought some new Mesa STR-418 6550-A tubes as they were really reasonable priced. Unfortunately there is not much to find in the forums regarding this type.

So far I know there are versions with a brown and a black base floating around and I tend to believe that the one with the brown base is a rebranded Tung-Sol and the one with the black base a Chinese (Shuguang). The tubes I bought are org. packed so its a little bit a lottery what I will receive :)

Does anybody has more knowledge on these tubes? They were used e.g. in Mesa Bass 400 amps and the Strategy 500 poweramp.

looks to me like a Shuguang 6550A. Any shared experiences are welcome as my testdrive tonight will be maximum bedroom level.

I believe you are right ...

You might get a answer if you ask a a more direct question ...

Hey, thanks for the reply :)

as there is not much to find using google I was looking for more general experiences like reliabilty, sound, how do they compare against other 6550 variants, etc.

In the end I am quite satisfied with the purchase. The tubes have definately more bass then the current production Shuguang 6550B. The 6550A is lacking a little bit definition on full chords while overtones are increasing, overall the charakter of the amp gets more punchy/angry (I am not very good in these comparisons) - nice tubes for the price.
