Hey guys, I'm on the hunt for a head. I'm looking for Jerry Cantrell, Alter Bridge, Candlebox, Stone Sour type of tone. Huge rhythm tone, and a nice fat lead tone. I wanna cut through the mix...so no super scooped hardcore metal! :D

2010 Dual Rectifier
Bogner Shiva
Splawn Quickrod

Help me out!

It's funny you should mention Dual Rec and Jerry Cantrell in the same sentence. I felt strange trying to dial in a Jerry tone with my Dual Rec a few weeks ago. But check it out!

Huge Rhythm tone just oozes out of a Dual Rec properly dialed of course.

Dual Rectos offer a larger range of tones than I previously had assumed. It wouldn't be a bad choice.

Keep em' coming!!

I'm a Dual Rec candy ass but that Bogner is a nasty nugget of filth,it sounds AWSOME
I think Brad made a clip of it,after i heard it i went to my local Bogner store and gave it a test.
The 20th annv was awsome, way better then the older models, more round sounding, more gain.
But if you want Jerry tone, buy a Friedman, doesn't get much better then that.IMO :D

What about a Mark V? Those seem to be getting great reviews. They seem really versatile.

I love the Shiva, I don't know if I would be able to afford the 20th anniversary model though. Would the regular suffice?

There's always the Mark series amps also.

Yea I'm really liking the Mark V, how are those?

There are those who say the older versions are better, but I, without having any experience with the previous versions, was very impressed with the Mark V. Definitely covers 'huge rhythms' as well as 'smooth leads' IMO. It is somewhat similar to the Recto in the same sense that there aren't many (if any) amps out there that are voiced like it, but it's a different sound than a Recto. If you get the chance to, I would give one a try.

I had a MKV for 6 months. It is a great amp. In the end it seemed to me like an amp manufacturer created a tube modeler of past great amps. They new versions of the originals were good, but not it. At least not to my ears. Close but no cuban cigar, more like a good dominican. Opinions vary. I tried EL34's, a variety of preamp tubes to get a better vibe from it. In the end, someone else got a great deal on a used MKV.

No thoughts of a Friedman?

I have a Recto and a Mark V. Both amps are sweet, but they're totally different amps with almost no crossover in terms of tone or feel. I love both and I'm willing give up neither.

That said, when playing with my band I usually take my Mark V. My Recto only has two channels, so the Mark V is a little more flexible in that regard.

I've had all three, and I'd go with anything but the Shiva. The regular Shiva doesn't have all that much gain, and it sucks at taking pedals. Plus it's bright on the top end, and muffled on the low end at the same time. IMHO.

The dual rec will get you there, and do a fine job IMHO, but I prefer the Splawn. We do a couple candlebox and AIC tunes and I've been using a QR for about 3 years with this band.

I imagine the Mk IV or Mk V will do fine as well.
