Mesa Cabinet inquiry

I have a early Mesa engineering vertical 2x12 cabs. I have a early Rectoverb Head 50watt. Due to the heads size I put the can on its side. The tone changes and kind of gets mushed I'd say. Anyway someone wants to possibly trade me a horizontal Mesa 2 x12 . I'm thinking about doing it however I've had a a few Mesa 412 cabs. Wich included one more harsh sounding for a mesa cab. I have also had an Avatar can with Chinese v30s. That cab was way too harsh for the rectoverb was very shrill sounding.

Basically I wanted to know if I'd be getting less quality speakers trading for a newer cab. Or if anyone has had experience with an older Mesa cab versus a new one and if there was notable tone difference. Let me know what you guys think thank you.

Pretty sure Mesa V30s are still made in England? So the only difference is the older cab will have broken in/well used V30s vs new. Now, there are differences between Recto/Traditional cabs as far as tightness vs boomy, etc...

I think the Recto 2x12 sounds less boxy than the vertical 2x12.

+1

I'd keep your cabinet but 212s are not good on the floor period. Have you tried getting it up off the floor onto a cabinet or stand like I recommended? I'd try that first and then start making changes if you still don't like it. I'm also assuming you've decided to keep the amp :D

Damn bro you are having issues with that recto. Stay with the Mesa. I have turned cabs on their side before without issue. My tremoverb loves my mesa 4x12".

Before doing anything drastic, try loading a k100 in there. That can help a bit. Mine likes British V30's and k85's just as much as the Mesa speakers.

First of all I'd like to say thank you for the replies this is good information. Don't get me wrong everything sounds great. The reason I think it sounds different on its side is because it's lower to the carpeted floor. When I have it upright and on its wheels it sounds in my opinion better. I was just trying to figure out if I got the horizontal cab it would sound better because it's meant to sit that way. I also read on another form that the speaker metal was made in China after 2002. I don't know if that really matters.

It's simple. The frequencies are hitting your knee caps if it is on the floor pointed straight out. There is a range you have to mindful of. Try setting it on the floor and leaning it back - like a floor monitor. It sounds better to you, I am assuming, standing up because one of speakers is hitting you in chest. Sometimes a 212 on the floor is the shit. The bees knees as they say.

I know you've see this before but since I have a Rectoverb and a 212 I'll show you again how I'm doing it :D

Pretty rig 311

Try a k100. That may be all you need.

But I agree, get it off the floor

It's a recto 212 cab does that mean how different is that from a regular to 2x12?

I think I can hear the boxy should care to elaborate?

The Recto/Traditional thing Racerxrated was referring to only applies to 4x12 cabs. By Recto he means the Standard (oversized) version, which is ~3" taller than the Traditional (Marshall sized) cab.

I'm not sure what causes it, but the vertical Recto 2x12 I tried was fizzier and more boxy than my regular horizontal 2x12. Think it has something to do with the slanted baffle changing the sound (internal reflections and all that).

There is also a Recto compact model 2x12 and a regular Recto 2x12 to be aware of.

Oh
And how exactly do you tell those apart?

A little update I got my hands on a Mesa 212 I think it was a rectifier 212. was in the Robinson Pittsburgh guitar center my head sounded fantastic through it. I tried different pickups and still not sure what I want to go with. I got home used my vertical 212 it sounds decent but the horizontal sounds better in my opinion and I need better pickups or new guitar LOL
