I have a mesa 412 halfback cab with 2 C90's and 2 EV's. I have both sections covered. I just got a 212 halfback cab. I was thinking of calling mesa and trying to get a back for the top part or just getting some tolex and plywood and making one.

Do you guys generally prefer the cabs fully closed or with the top or bottom open?
Is there a tolex that is pretty close to mesa's tolex that I should check out if I make the back myself?

I am considering making a new back for the bottom section of my 212, so I can put in a marshall input jack, which will make the cab 8ohms per side stereo or 4ohm or 16ohms mono. I have this on a couple of other cabs and its very nice to have as an option....

bump.

Just noticed that the bottom section is ported on my 212 halfback cab, never noticed that in the pictures...

I dont think Mesa will make a back for you.

I like both open and closed backs...it just depends on the speakers. When push comes to shove, I prefer a 4x12 with a closed back and 4 EVM12L's or Eminence MS-12's.

So on your 412 you liked both sections closed? I have never tried the top of my 412 open yet, I should get around to that.

Sounds like I am just better to buy a piece of plywood and make a back myself. I wonder where I can find some tolex similar to Mesa's....

My 212 came with 2 G12T-75's, they sound okay in the cab, but are not my favorite speaker for a mark IV.

I ran my MK IV with a 4x12 half back loaded with MC90s last sunday at my jam band stuff and loved the tones I was getting with the master at around 3, solid punch but also a warm fill from the open section....best of both worlds.

For cleans the half back is very hard to beat imo, just sounds so full and crisp but also warmer than a sealed 4x12.

My cab had a back made out of plywood, it is very easy to seal the top without having to go to Mesa.

Finally tried my metal grill 412 with the top back portion off. I really liked the change, the cab sounded much more open and rich. For now I am thinking of leaving the top portion open on both cabs.

Its funny, I bought the metal grill 412 for its ability to run either chamber open or closed back and than never used that feature, I just kept the whole thing closed.

So does anyone prefer all MC90's over all EV's or 2 EV/2MC90? I am thinking of trying 4 MC90's in my 412. I used to love EV's, not sure why, but they sound a bit harsh to me on the high end now....
