I owned a 3 a while back and loved it...and I'd like to have that mark tone again :) I'm just not sure which model I'd prefer....I don't need 3 channels available on the fly, just a nice clean and hi gain rhythm would be perfect :) Having said that, I do like the footswitchable FX loop on the 4...but I like the price of the 3 :) Which do you prefer and why?

Mark III = more angry, raw. Red and Blue stripes have more gain than the IV. There's a little compromise with the clean. Rhythm needs the volume mod.

IV = more footswitching ability. Independant clean/gain channels. R2 has it's flaws. Gain is smoother more hi-fi sounding, not as angry sounding as the III.

oh hereeeeeee we go..... :D

Bro just let me bring the kemper over, youll never want another amp again :D

^^
This. If you're playing metal, go with the III. Its like 5-10% metally-er

I would go with the mark III, I think you will appreciate the additional agressiveness.

Until that Kemper has the ability to put out 1 amp to each side of a power amp....I'll pass ;)

Think you can find one for 50bux?

Looks like my next amp is narrowed down to 2 contenders now :) Mesa MarkIII or a VHT 50 st

Guess who has a Mark IV for sale?

They are both great amps but Dan has it spot on above. You probably can't go wrong either way Keith.

Only played 1 Mk III and much preferred the two Mk IVs I owned. Wish I still had one.

The price of the III's have gone up the last couple of years. The last red stripe I had, which I sold to Daniel, I think I paid $700 for. Now, they are all over a grand. IV's can still be had for about $1100. Even at those prices, for the price of the V, you can almost buy a III and a IV. They are two totally different amps and you just have to check them out in person and live with them for a while. The III is easy to dial up. The IV, you got to be married to for a while and once dialed in, you will threaten anyone who touches it with their life. Two things about the V pisses me off.....the power section sucks and they put the IIC+ and IV modes on the same channel. A Mark V slaved to a Marshall though, tough to beat.

Steve,

can you explain the slave out method. I would like to try that out..except I don't have a marshall.

Do you need 2 cabs? I have an 8 ohm and a 16 ohm... Does the Mark V hook up to the cab or go direct into the other amp?

You need two cabs. Use the slave out from the Mark V into the FX loop return of another amp (modded Marshall in this case). Marshall into its own cab. You will get a line level signal from the Mark V into the Marshall. This modded Marshall (from Dan Gower) has some post-preamp EQ on it it to control the bottom and top end from the slaved amp. I am using an old Intellifex in between the amps for a W/D set up.
