According to John Petrucci, the MKV slays the IIC+! :D

But, then again.....I don't exactly buy what he's saying in this video (1:45). While I do not doubt his love for the MKV,....I do believe Mesa wanted him to market it this way, in order to convert others into this way of thinking, with all the controversy surrounding the MKV (IIC+ Mode) vs. IIC+ debate.

Ask him if he is willing to sell his IIC+s. I'm pretty sure he won't.

A couple years ago myself and several other players did a side-by-side comparison of the two. We were able to dial in the V's 2C+ mode to very closely mimic the real thing, but it was far from intuitive. I can't recall the settings but the controls were VERY different in order to get them to sound similar.

That said, I felt the the V stood on its own merits...it was a great sounding, extremely versatile amp.

I wish Mesa wouldn't have used the mark I, IIC+, and IV labels on the channels and just called them something else.

I am sure mesa did this so they have another excuse to not reissue the IIC+ and to keep the mark I and IV out of production as well. Mesa can now they, look we have those modes on the mark V.

I have read that the IIC+ mode was designed after the IIC+ without the EQ. Not sure how accurate this is though.

Remember when the V came out and Mesa made him change over? He kicked and screamed like a baby.

Ya gotta love the internet.

I agree with this. Let him put his money where his mouth is. ;)

+1 ......I think it would've been fine if they just labeled them something else. IMO, they made a huge mistake labeling them as they did. Because, they are NOT exactly the same. By doing this, they should have known that the MKV would get slammed for this fact. I think the MKV is a great amp myself. I just choose to ignore those labels and accept the modes for what they are.

what i do know is i prefered his tone before he went to the mark v..no wonder he was kicking and screaming

Does anyone actually believe Mesa "makes" John Petrucci play a Mark V?

I know what you are saying Dave. If I were in his position I would play the Vs just to preserve my never to be made again IIC+ amps. I'm sure he is completely fine playing the V. My comment above was just to say that if someone put a gun to his head and said choose I'm sure he would walk away with his IIC+ amps. I've seen him twice live playing with the V and it sounds good to me. I like the IV quite a bit more than the V for my use.

Don't forget the fact that JP's tone is beyond processed.
You can't tell the difference between either once it has passed through all his processing....even when he uses so called "dry" sounds.

You mean like this:

I really like Petrucci but his tone sounds really processed these days. I loved his tone around the SFAM/6DOIT period.

If Mesa reissued the IIC+ everyone would bitch that it doesn't sound like a REAL IIC+.
Forget what the label says and just make it sound as good as you can.

If Mesa stuck an old IIC+ in a new chassis and called it a re-issue... everyone would complain that it doesn't sound like a real IIC+.
