Mesa MC-90 vs. EVM in a Hardwood Cab

I would go with an EV EVM12L, I don't think it would be too bright, you can always adjust the brightness with the onboard eq.

That is a killer looking head and cab shell. Love to see the picture of your rig when you get it all done.

Strat+Marshall has a C90 and EVM-12L for sale, so PM him if you want to pick one up...

I have two Mesa theile cabs with one of each. Both are great speakers.

Depends on what tone you're going after.

C90 = more mid character and livelier sounding.

EV = tighter cleaner harder sounding.

Also what volume will you run your rig at? The C90's are known for cone cry when cranked up loud which can be annoying.

Have you experienced the cone cry on the C90's in person? I have never read about complaints on CL80's or C90's for having cone cry issues, nor experienced it myself.....

Did a quick test using a Mesa Boogie 50 cal + combo with a C90 and two theile's - one with a C90 and one with an EV. I ran each speaker through the 50 cal +. Results:

1. The two C90's both cry with a high Ab note (i.e. 18th fret 1st string, in my case 1st string 15th fret bent one step up to "A" on a Eb tuned les paul).

2. The EV theile did not have any cry at all - I even pushed the volume a little harder. Nothing but clean articulate notes.

If I could only have one cab, I think my favorite cab overall is actually the theile C90 cab - warmer fuller mids. The two speakers are a great combination. I thought I read Drew's post on this forum that John Sykes used a combination of these speakers to record Whitesnake 87.

Here is what my Mark IV head looks like now. I am trying to trade the old headshell on the Boogie Board for an EV speaker.

EVM's sound cool in the room but recorded  .....i had an extremely hard time getting anything from them where the MC90's are pretty easy to work with. When i listened back to anything i recorded with the EVM's the word sterile bounced around in my head.

The only experience I have with a single EVM is through a Thiele cab and that combo sounds huge for a 1x12 and for higain it sounds great.

Nice wood!

I am pleasantly surprised at how good this rig sounds. The EV is not bright or harsh at all. Very clear sounding.

I had a Mesa Halfback 2x12 with OEM EVs and I just never bonded with that cab. I used the Mark IV and a Voodoo Modded Recto with it and never got a tone that I really liked.

I liked the tone of this hardwood rig instantly.

Very nice. I have heard an EV in a mesa thiele 112, it was a great sound.

I have a halfback 212 and I am going with 2 MC90's. I was going to go with a EV in the bottom and MC90 in the top. I bought the cab with G12T-75's and those were a bad match for a mark IV.

I have a EV and a C-90 that I've tried out in my Thiele but I really preferred the C90. I think it's because I like the way Celestions sound or something. I'm going to get a second thiele and run one with the EV and one with the C90 because I think they'd compliment each other, but I'd almost bet I'll end up pulling the EV out eventually and putting in another Celestion.
