Mesa Roadster or Mark V or other for bedroom?

I'd like to get a combo for bedroom jamming.

I play stuff like Alter Bridge (Mark Tremonti), Tool, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater.
Mostly modern rock and progressive stuff.

Which one do you think will sound best at bedroom volumes?
Is there another combo you would recommend me instead?

Both are good choices. I would also look for used Mark III and IV combos, Mesa Electra-Dyne(with a boost), or a 5150/6505 combo.

Or for a more "brown sound" try a Splawn Street Rod or Egnater Renegade.

In the bedroom? Mark V. Hands down.

I own both a Recto and Mark V.

Rectifiers at low volumes tend to sound thin and buzzy. I good portion of their 'sound' comes from driving the piss out of a set of speakers, at which point the amp turns into a monster.

The Mark V on the other hand has the graphic EQ, so you're able to dial in a really thick tone at very low volume levels. Using 10w mode also helps cut a lot of bottom end, which tends to travel through walls and floors even at low volume levels.

That said, I'd suggest you skip the combo and go for a Mark V head/Recto 2x12. Given the bands you listed I think you'd prefer the closed back sound over that of an open back.

Thanks. I think a 2x12 is too much...

Would a Stiletto 1x12 cab be OK? Or is there not much difference in volume/loudness between a 2x12 and 1x12?

This luxury setup is strictly for bedroom playing

Volume is similar but the 2x12 will sound thicker, which usually means you're less likely to turn it up hoping for a thicker tone.

See you guys in a couple of hours, I'm off to pick up a Mark V.

good choice

ive owned a raodster head and now i have a mark 5 and the mark deff sounds alot better for bedroom playing. only cuz it can be switched into 10 watt mode and kept at low volumes

the roadster still sounded good but it didnt really reach its full potential until you gave it some volume

Mark V all the way. Awesome amp. I play mine bedroom level frequently and it sounds great at all volumes. I thought the Roadster was too much for bedroom and lacks character.

Good call!!

I agree with all the other comments. Love my Mark V, sounds great for bedroom volumes. Here's a pretty good video that shows this, in the 10-watt mode.
