I am limited on the amount of weight that I can carry. I run a Mesa express 5:50 head and a Mesa Recto horizontal cabinet 2x12 and I love the sound. However I can’t carry the 2x12 cab around anymore so I am going to purchase 2 separate 1x12 cabinets.

The cabinet I own currently the Mesa Reco 2x12 horizontal cabinet has V30s in them and it sounds sweet with my amp head.

I was debating between the 1x12 closed-back Thiele cab with a C90 speaker vs the Mini-Recto 1x12 cab with V30s.

I have read that a lot of people like the Thiele cab and the fact that it is ported gives it more depth. I have read that the Mesa Mini Rectifier 1x12 has v30s but is not quite versatile and boring.

I like the reviews of the 1x12 thiele cab. My only hesitation is that I have never really played through a C90 speaker and I know for a fact that I like the V30s.

Should I go with the Thiele or the Mini Rectifier?

I was going to get one 1x12 closed back and another one as open back. Right now I am choosing which closed-back cabinet to purchase Thiele 1x12 C90 or Mini-Recto 1x12 V30.

I play a wide range of tones from indie to hard rock with lots of cleans and lots of distortion too. I like warm cleans and big punchy mid-range cutting distortion sounds. I don’t like distortion to be too harsh, I like the warmth and the crisp cutting rather than harsh noise.

Advice? Experiences?

Thank you in advance.

I haven't played the Mesa Thiele with C90 but can tell you that that cabinet follows the TL806 plans which are meant for the EVM12L. It's still probably a good sounding cab but the cab is maximized with the EVM12L.

True but I believe Mesa modified the design of the current Thiele cab to work better with the C90.

I built a pair of 806's. The Thiele is .75" wider - added on the port side. It is widened to fit the short head shells. Otherwise theyre the same. I wish I knew that shit when I built mine, but I found out the hard way. My Mark III short head hangs over the side a fraction of an inch. No Biggie. I love these boxes. I originally loaded them with EVM12Ls. I thought it sounded terrible. I swapped one out for a Mesa C90 I had laying around and that did it for me. The EV had a very narrow bandwidth by comparison. The C90 is very full and has a very sweet n glassy top end. Similar to a V30 but with a slightly extended top and bottom. I swapped out the 2nd EV with a warehouse CL80 copy (I forget what its called). Its sound is a little lacking in the highs compared to the C90 and the low mids are much more exaggerated. Still much fuller sound than the EV in these cabs. I love the EVs in other cabs, not so much in my 806's.

Also, the Thiele/806 is ported and has a different feel and response than both a closed back cab and an open back. I would say its closer to a closed back sound though.

My cabs are really tight.

If you can follow blue prints and cut straight lines with a saw, I highly recommend building yourself a pair. I built my pair for just over $100 - not including speakers.
