These were such cool Preamp pedals, I had the opportunity to buy one 10 years ago, but as I was limited by my amp at the time to how It would have been useful, I passed.

Do any of you guys use/have this pedal and is it worth tracking one down?

I had one from about nine years through eight years ago...be honest with you, I couldn't get much happening with it, but at that time I really didn't "get" tube amps, so could be great, or could be as crappy as I thought. I CAN tell you it was built pretty rock solid; I'd feel really comfortable putting it on a pedal board and not being too gentle with it.

I had one for a few years. It was s warm tune powered overdrive and that's about it. Not worth the price tag IMO.

I've always been interested in trying out one of these but this is what I've always heard as well.

I remember the guy at the store told me "yeah, this is THE mesa sound in a pedal" and I was psyched to get it. SO that pedal finally came in, I rushed to buy it and what a piece of shit it turned out to be, I swear I knew it was ghastly when I tried it in the store, but I bought it anyway. It looked ultra cool, but tone-wise it was just a dark, muddy mess unless you were after an unpunchy, dark overdrive/fuzz type tone. I had it for awhile, I tried I really did, but it was not worth it.

Borrowed one from a friend a few years back to use at a gig. Highly under-impressed.. move on to much nicer pedals like a bbpreamp or something. They just don't sound very good IMO.

I had the rack preamp for a summer.... horrible for any high gain sounds. Passable for cleans...

This pedal, IMO, was intended to be plugged straight into a power amp. Using the amplifier output, I'll agree with most others here, but if you used the power amp output, it's like a totally different pedal. It's not really an overdrive/distortion box. It is a preamp, and when run that way, sounds much better. Not 100%, but it is tighter and more defined.

Had one for a while. Ran it in front of Blackface Fender. Didn't sound good at all in that application.
