I'm not sure I hear any modulation, if so it's pretty subtle. His very bright jangly clean tone with that quick delay always had a cool unique sound. I believe they did use flanger on that intro before at some shows.
BTW, you're talking about Thing that should not be, right?

Yes.
This one is very different than to other live versions. It seems that he is using a tremolo with a flanger or some pitch shifting.
If you listen to this song at Milton Keynes it sounds like chorus while at Seattle is sounds like Flanger

Hi guys

i´m trying to figure out what effect this at the beginning of the song.
At first i thought it was a flanger but not sure.

This reminds me I still have to go through my pictures of Metallica & other bands when I saw them live over a year ago.

Rob has some spooky spidery flanger type of effect on his bass at the very beginning.

James' guitar sounds chorused on a quite fast, 'wobbly' setting but mixed in quite low, then delayed quite prominently (which adds to the wobble). However it could also be a a flanger on a fast Rate, low Colour/Feedback, and low Range or mix. Flanger & Chorus are similar in their makeup, but they have different base delay times.

I wish he ran the chorus on his heavy guitar sound but a slow Speed, just to give it that wicked swirl. It would sound killer for that particular song.

The "swooping" effect on Kirk's guitar sound near the end, is definitely a flanger effect with a high Colour/Resonance setting.

Mind you though the guitar tones are awesome in this particular recording. For ages the recording always sounds dull and bland, like half the gain and character got sucked out.
