It will never sound right until James decides to use a MK.

SWEET!!

This can only turn into a polite discourse on the complexities of artists and their need to grow and evolve and keep things fresh…. :jedi: :force:

Ok…let's begin….

fuck it…….

Can someone explain to me what '3D' means in terms of guitar tone?

It means that Metallica's guitar tone sucks balls not only in 2 dimensions, but also in 3.

EVH - "Running with the Devil"
Jimmy Page - "Since I've been Loving You" from The Song remains the same
Hendrix - "Machine Gun"
3D sound is when you get enough over-tones it sounds like several guitars are playing at once.

Oh wow, never knew there was a new term for double tracking guitars.......learn something new everyday.

I think it's mainly the mix. The guitars are kind of burried. Can mainly hear drums and vocals.

Rushing like crazy lol. That song is hard enough to sing at normal speed.

The only overdub in any of those three songs is the rhythm track behind the solo part in RWTD, right?

I was mainly joking, I hear a lot of stereo reverb on all of the above tracks. Thus, the "BIG" sound.
These recordings also had the benefit of being analog and back in a time when producers knew how to properly place a mic.

I read that in Gilfoyle's voice, from Silicon Valley.

Funny answers to this question so far.

You could add "organic" or "bloom" and be talking about the same thing.

It's hard to explain, but you know it when you hear it. Hard to capture on a recording, but live in a room you'll pick up on it. There's more to the sound than just a plucked string coming through the speakers. It's as if "breath" or some other action is being added to the base note making if "fuller", more "rounded".

If you know what a "sterile" amp sounds like, "flat', "lifeless", "thin",.... "3D" would be the opposite of that. :D

The funny thing is that Metallica's live tone has been slammed by many folks for years now, long before they started using the Axe2 in the last year or so...........I guess their tube amps were mushy & not 3D either! lol

I haven't liked their sound since the Black album.

I've noticed they have been using WAY more mids and less gain in the last 10 or so years (live tone), it's been a progression of suckage. It becomes more and more like a rock tone, and less like a metal tone the older they get. I really don't like it. I miss the aggressive, ass kicking Mesa Mark tone of the late 80's. Back when they weren't afraid to scoop the mids a bit and have a really ferocious tone.

The Axe FX hasn't been good for anyones tone IMO. It blows for live use... in the studio is where it should stay, and with moderation.
