What’s your favorite combo why?

I typically just run a sm57, but think I want to start running two simultaneously for a bigger sound... Was stuck on whether I want to get an e906, or 421 to run with.

I'm running a SM57 + a Warm Audio WA-47 together right now.
Sounds really cool together.

When I was engineering SM57 was the mainstay. I also had a Royer 121 in the locker, a 421 for cabs, the i5, and an e906 (along with many others). They all got a lot of time. Everyone's recommendations on here are good and there's no wrong answer among them. they all play at very different price ranges of course. The royer had a lot of body and was very smooth. The 421 and e906 had similar vibes but hit different frequencies. I personally favored the 421 with the 57 most of the time even with access to the others. The royer smacked on cleans or on a boogie. The i5 was a late addition I grew very fond of towards the end. Very clear. Was not harsh. Good price point. I also loved me some audix mics on drums. Anyway, the 421 and e906 can complement a signal, but if the signal is already bright it will take good placement and EQ to make it not ice pick. The 121 is gorgeous and warm but can come across as dull on the wrong sound source.

I hate the 57/421 combo :dunno: My audix D2 mixes best with my 57s ime

A buddy of mine leant me his 421, and it was great with the 57. It totally made sense straight away as to why it’s a frequently combo. I’m going to add one at some point.

For something different, the telefunken m81 is another good one that blends well with the 57. It’s less aggressive than either the 57 or the 421. Compared to the 57, it doesn’t have as strong of a proximity effect and doesn’t have the upper mid peak. It has a really pleasing mid character that isn’t pinched and has a slight presence boost.

57 & a TLM102 is my favorite. Check out Zach Wish's Youtube channel for a lot of clips of this combo.

That’s another I was going to mention, I might have done my own clips of this combo at some point. The 102 is good on its own

SM57 on a V30, PG27 on a different mic if I want more body or depth.

57 and a 121 is a cool combo. The special mic clip that Royer makes helps alot getting them setup.
I never had luck woth Sennheiser mics. Too harsh in the upper mids when I tried the 421 or 609.
Would like to try something else, always down for a second mic to try.

57 & 57 in parallel are awesome. Google around there's a great clip made for this for perfect phase. This happens to be the not only my favorite option, but the cheapest
(2) 57s in 45degrees is also great, popular in European metal

57 & 421 is a rock solid combo, but also can sound a bit dated 80s
57 & 121 is amazing, but more for low and mid gain or lead & airy sounds
