When I was engineering SM57 was the mainstay. I also had a Royer 121 in the locker, a 421 for cabs, the i5, and an e906 (along with many others). They all got a lot of time. Everyone's recommendations on here are good and there's no wrong answer among them. they all play at very different price ranges of course. The royer had a lot of body and was very smooth. The 421 and e906 had similar vibes but hit different frequencies. I personally favored the 421 with the 57 most of the time even with access to the others. The royer smacked on cleans or on a boogie. The i5 was a late addition I grew very fond of towards the end. Very clear. Was not harsh. Good price point. I also loved me some audix mics on drums. Anyway, the 421 and e906 can complement a signal, but if the signal is already bright it will take good placement and EQ to make it not ice pick. The 121 is gorgeous and warm but can come across as dull on the wrong sound source.
