I'm starting to do a bit more recording in my home studio and would like to upgrade my mics from my current stable of 57s and 58s (and an Audix D3). I will primarily be doing vocals and speaker cabs, as well as the occassional acoustic (and perhaps an infrequent drum track). What do I need to get that's reasonable priced? I'm running into a Boss BR1600.

Hmm, something that does vocals, electric and acoustic guitars? That's a tough one unless you want to dish out some pretty big coin. I would say the best all around for all those sources is a Neumann U87...spendy! Even crazier would be a U47!

You could probably get some good stuff all around with a Sennheiser 421. Great on guitar cabs, should work nicely on acoustic (one of the better dynamic mics out there anyway) and I know guys who use 421's on voice over work so it could work for vocals I'm sure.

If you want a condenser to handle all those duties under $500 I would look at a used Audio-Technica AT4047/SV. It's got some great mojo, kind of like a poor man's Neumann but also a little darker. Works great on vocals and acoustics and I'm sure you could get some nice stuff out of it on cabs, mybe placed a foot away.

Those are my thoughts so far.

sienhieser 421 i think captures the trues sound of an amp when placed correctly on the amp that is being recorded

I think I read this wrong and thought you were asking about an all-in-one mic that could do all of those sources. If you're looking at one for each let us know your budget and we can help you figure things out!

I'll say for guitar cabs, from cheapest to more expensive, some of your best choices are Blue Ball > Sennheiser 421 > Royer R121.

Vocals there are so many great mics, sky's the limit! On the cheap, Audio Technica, Rode and Shure have some great offerings. More expensive, Telefunken and Neumann!

Acoustic guitars, can't go wrong with an SM81. Mid range, Audio Technica, and high end, Neumann, Telefunken and so many more.

Vocals and acoustics would be the main things...I get a pretty good sound with the 57 and D3 close up on the cabs (although a mic that pics up the room well would be a welcome addition). I really don't have a budget but would like to keeo it in the $2-300 range...I wouldn't limit myseld to that though if going a little higher would make a big difference (no Neumans though ;) ).

AKG C214. It's a lot like the 414. but a lot cheaper because it doesn't have multiple pickup patterns. You can even buy a set for a relatively affordable price.

Ribbon mics rule on guitar micing, even cheaper ribbons sound great. My octava ribbon records my VH4 killer!

I use two mics when recording guitar:

1) Heil PR30 - I love the Heil PR30. This mic has very little proximity effect. As a result, you have one less variable to deal with. This mic captures the mid "vocal" voice of the guitar...very focused.

2) Senn MD421 - This mic has a strong low end proximity effect, however, since it also has a variable low end filter, it's very easy to dial the low muddy end out that is associated with close mic'n.

Together these mics are a perfect match for capturing what I hear from my rig. the PR30 gets the meat of the guitar "vocal" and the MD421 adds the top end and some low end to round the rest of the tone out...VERY COOL!

Hi guys..

I recently purchased Entertech ET-13000 mic at very affordable price. It's really good & im very happy for this setup...
